North Carolina Central Upsets Maryland Eastern Shore in MEAC Softball Championship Opener

NORFOLK, Va., May 11, 2022 – Madison Mifsud went 3-for-4 and drove in a game-high four runs to lead No. 5 North Carolina Central to an upset of No. 4 Maryland Eastern Shore in the opening game of the 2022 MEAC Softball Championship.
 
The Eagles will take on top-seeded Morgan State at 3 p.m. today. Maryland Eastern Shore drops into the loser’s bracket and will play the loser of today’s 6 p.m. game at 3 p.m. on Thursday, which will feature No. 2 Howard and the winner of the No. 3 Norfolk State and No. 6 Coppin State.
 
UMES (18-32) got on the board first in the bottom of the second on Tyanna Roberts’ single to left field that scored Nasya Goodman.
 
NCCU (12-34) responded in the top of the third with a two-RBI single by Misfud to go up 2-0. The Eagles tacked on another run in the inning when pinch runner Kia Borum scored on an error by McKenzie Abiley.
 
The Eagles scored two more runs in the fifth and then exploded for five runs in the seventh to put the game away.
 
MEAC Co-Rookie of the Year Kresley Tatum went 3-for-4 for UMES. Goodman pitched 4.2 innings and gave up five runs, four earned, in the losing effort.
 
Hailey Batista, Jayla Barr, Ashanti Eubanks and Diamond Porter each had two hits for NCCU. Jaden Davis picked up her fourth win of the season after tossing seven innings and allowing seven hits and two earned runs while striking out four batters.
