CARY, N.C., April 29, 2022 – South Carolina State and Morgan State advanced to the men’s championship match of the 2022 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tennis Championship following their semifinal wins on Friday afternoon at the Cary Tennis Park.
South Carolina State is in search of its 17
th all-time title and its 14
th since 2004. Morgan State last won the MEAC championship in men’s tennis in 2019, its first.
Match 1: South Carolina State 4, North Carolina Central 0 -- Box Score
The top seed and defending champion, South Carolina State made quick work of doubles to start the match. The Bulldogs got a 6-3 win at No. 2 from Rostislav Haflinger and Ivan Pauluychenko, as well as a 6-1 win from Zhanger Almashey and Omer Gorgun at No. 3.
Gorgun also won at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-0 over Amit Baran.
Diego Araluz was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Shaka Cristellotti at No. 5 singles, and No. 6 singles saw Luka Stefanovic win 6-0, 6-0 over LaQuon Gilchrist.
The Bulldogs improved to 11-9 on the season, while North Carolina Central ended the season at 5-16.
Match 2: Morgan State 4, Howard 0 -- Box Score
Mikeal Carpenter and Nihit Rawal at No. 1, and Sebastian Lopez and Makkijha Brown at No. 3, gave Morgan State the doubles point with 6-0 victories to open the match.
Carpenter also won at No. 1 singles, taking care of fellow First Team All-MEAC honoree Justin Cadeau 6-1, 6-1. Rawal also won his singles match, defeating Marcel Dawson 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3, and Lopez was victorious at No. 5 with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Hassimiyou Dieng.
Morgan State improved to 11-8 on the season, while Howard ended its season at 6-8 overall.
