CARY, N.C., April 28, 2022 – Two men’s quarterfinal matches were on the docket for the first day of the 2022 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tennis Championships on Thursday at the Cary Tennis Park.
North Carolina Central and Howard were victorious in the afternoon matches.
Match 1: North Carolina Central 4, Coppin State 1 -- Box Score
No. 4 seed North Carolina Central took the doubles point after taking the No. 3 match by default and with Sebastian Pino and Oliver Saarinen winning 6-1 at the No. 2 slot, and the NCCU Eagles were, in essence, up 3-0 after winning the No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches by default.
Coppin State’s Vansh Kapoor gave the team its lone point with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles over Amit Baran, but Saarinen won his singles match, at No. 4, defeating Dean Waterman 6-2, 6-2.
Match 2: Howard 4, Norfolk State 0 -- Box Score
The third-seeded Bison dominated doubles play to open the match. Tory Bailey and Marcel Dawson won 6-1 at No. 2 doubles, while Gabe Knowles and Kyle Martin swept at No. 3 doubles, 6-0.
The bottom half of the singles draw was just as strong for the Bison. Daniel Dunac won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles over Roosevelt Brown, while Hassimiyou Dieng also won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles over Ryan Richter.
Martin defeated Vincent Jarvis 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles.
The Eagles will face top seed and defending champion South Carolina State in Friday’s semifinal round, while the Bison will square off against No. 2 seed Morgan State.
