MEAC Announces Weekly Softball Honors, presented by Coca-Cola

NORFOLK, Va., April 25, 2022Norfolk State senior Gabby Vaughan has been named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Softball Player of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola, it was announced on Monday. Meanwhile, Maryland Eastern Shore redshirt freshman Kresley Tatum and Norfolk State freshman Kenna Higa are the Co-Rookies of the Week and Morgan State sophomore Anaya Hunte is the Pitcher of the Week.
 
Vaughan (1B, Sr., Chesapeake, Va.) hit .643 (9-for-14) with four RBIs, three runs scored, two home runs, a double and a stolen base in five games for the Spartans last week. In the three-game sweep over Delaware State, she hit .857 with six hits in seven at-bats and tallied a 1.857 slugging percentage.
 
Kresley (OF/P, r-Fr., Alburtis, Pa.) went 6-for-12 with five runs scored, six stolen bases, two walks and an RBI in the weekend series at Howard. In the nightcap of Saturday’s doubleheader, she was 3-for-4 with three runs and five steals. The second steal in that game set a new school record for steals in a season (29). She now has a total of 33 steals this year.
 
Higa (3B, Fr., Honolulu, Hawaii) hit .429 (3-for-7) with eight RBIs and two home runs in the three-game sweep of Delaware State. In the first game of the doubleheader with the Lady Hornets, Higa hit the first grand slam of her career. In the Spartans’ five games last week, she tallied four hits, nine RBIs and three homers.
 
Hunte (P, So., Burlington, N.J.) went 2-0 for the week with a 1.68 ERA. In 10.1 innings of work, she recorded 17 strikeouts, while only allowing two runs on seven hits. In the series opener against South Carolina State, she gave up one run, three hits and struck out six batters in six innings, while also recording a hit, stolen base and scoring a run in the win.
 
Other Top Performers
Brissa Alvarado (Coppin State) went 5-for-12 with four RBIs, three doubles, two runs and a home run for the week.
 
Lealani Ricks (Howard) hit .583 with three runs and two RBIs in four games for the Bison.  
 
Analise De La Roca (Howard) pitched 12.1 innings and posted a 2.27 ERA with two saves in four appearances last week.  
 
Aliya Ewell (Morgan State) batted .500 with three runs, three RBIs and three stolen bases.  
 
Joana Vallejo (Norfolk State) went 2-0 with 14 strikeouts last week and struck out 12 batters in the series opener against Delaware State.
 
Ashanti Eubanks (North Carolina Central) recorded a .467 on-base percentage in four games last week, extending her consecutive streak of getting on base via a hit or walk to 19 games.
 
Maegan Garrison (North Carolina Central) went 7-for-13 with four runs, three RBIs, a triple and a homer in four games for the Eagles.
