MEAC Announces Weekly Tennis Honors, presented by Coca-Cola

NORFOLK, Va., April 20, 2022Morgan State freshman Niles Rachal was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola, the conference office announced today, as well as Rookie of the Week. Norfolk State sophomore Amber Fuller was named Women’s Tennis Player of the Week, while teammate Breana Cook was named Rookie of the Week.
 
Rachal (Fr., Woodstock, Ga.) was 3-0 in singles play last week, starting with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Bloomsburg’s Fernandos Barros at No. 3 singles. He then defeated Oscar Hernandez of James Madison at No. 4 singles, before closing out the week with a conference win over Coppin State’s Luka Markovic, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. Rachal’s week also included a doubles win over Bloomsburg.
 
Fuller (So., Greensboro, N.C.) was 4-0 in a pair of matches against Hampton, winning both of her singles and doubles matches against the rival Pirates. In the first match, a continuation from the week prior interrupted by rain, Fuller defeated Milena Amedieva 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2 singles, before moving to No. 1 singles for the second match – where she took care of Viktoria Ljungman 6-1, 6-0. She won the first doubles match alongside Aleksandra Evdokimova 6-0, before taking the second 6-4.
 
Cook (Fr., Long Beach, Calif.) was also a perfect 4-0 against Hampton. She started at No. 4 singles, where she defeated Franzene Tsui 6-1, 6-0 in the continued match. For the second match against the Pirates, Cook moved up to No. 3 singles to defeat Laura Peralta 7-6, 6-3. In doubles play, Cook won 6-1 and 6-0 – with Laura Ruiz in the first match and Andrea Barcenas in the second.
 
Other Top Performers
Iva Jankovic (Coppin State) won singles matches against Morgan State and Harford Community College, while also going a combined 2-0 in doubles play.
 
Stefania Moysiadi (Morgan State) earned singles wins over Johns Hopkins and Bloomsburg at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively.
 
Hannah Smith (Morgan State) went a combined 3-1 in singles play and 2-2 in doubles action throughout the week, including a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Coppin State’s Kristina Georgieva at No. 2 singles.
 
Hugo Massoni Lena (Norfolk State) was 2-0 against Virginia State, picking up his doubles match before earning a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles over Laurence Britt.
 
Federico Rebecchini (Norfolk State) defeated Nigel Stewart of Virginia State 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, while also grabbing the doubles win.
