NORFOLK, Va., April 13, 2022 – Howard University will serve as the host for the 2022 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men’s Golf Championship at Argyle Country Club in Silver Spring, Md., Monday – Wednesday, April 18-20.
The championship will feature Maryland Eastern Shore, North Carolina Central and host Howard.
The 18-hole course at Argyle Country Club, which has a reputation for being one of the area's best maintained courses, features 6,500 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 71. Opened in 1945, Argyle Country Club has hosted numerous championships, including Maryland State Open and Maryland State Women's Amateur, and has served as a qualifying site for the U.S. Senior Open, U.S. Senior Women's Amateur, U.S. Amateur, U.S. Junior Amateur, U.S.G.A. Four-Ball and U.S. Open.
Maryland Eastern Shore’s last outing was the Aggie Invitational in Greensboro, N.C. at the end of March. Freshman Logan Kiley had the Hawks’ best score of the event, posting a 247 over three rounds. Junior Thabang Moephuli followed him with a 248 in the event, while freshman Michael Davis had the squad's best individual round in round three, when he posted a 79 (+7).
At the same event, North Carolina Central junior Daniel Barbare tied for runner-up on the individual leaderboard and led the Eagles to a tie for fourth place in the team standings. Barbare, the reigning MEAC Golfer of the Month, posted scores of 74, 74 and 78 to tie with Landon Johnstone of Texas Southern for second place at 10-over-par (226).
Another highlight of the Eagles’ outing was senior Jesper Gullstrand’s hole-in-one on the 208-yard 12
th hole, which was the first hole-in-one registered in the NCCU men's golf records book.
Howard wrapped up regular-season competition this past weekend at the Princeton Invitational, a three-round, two-day event that took place at the Springdale Golf Club in Princeton, N.J. The Bison finished tied for 10
th overall and shot 8-over par (296) in the final round. Seniors Everett Whiten, Jr. and Gregory Odom led the way with top 10 finishes. On Sunday, Whiten shot 2-under par (70) and finished the tournament 1-under (212), which tied him for fifth overall. Odom shot even par (213) throughout the event and tied for eighth.
The Bison are the runners-up from the 2021 MEAC Men’s Golf Championship. Whichever team wins the title this year will be winning their first-ever MEAC championship in men’s golf.
The three-round championship will begin on Monday at 8:30 a.m. The final round on Wednesday will start at 9 a.m. Live scoring will be available through GolfStat.
