NORFOLK, Va. – After winning back-to-back MEAC regular-season and tournament titles, Norfolk State head men's basketball coach Roberts Jones has been selected for several honors.
HBCU All-Stars, LLC recently named Jones the Ben Jobe HBCU Division I Coach of the Year. He was also recently announced as a finalist for the Hugh Durham Award, given annually to the top mid-major coach in the country by CollegeInsider.com. The basketball website also named Jones a finalist for both the Skip Prosser Man of the Year Award and Jim Phelan Award
Additionally, Jones was named Monday as the head coach of Team John McLendon in the Inaugural HBCU All-Star Game, which takes place on Sunday, April 3 during Final Four weekend in New Orleans at the UNO Lakefront Arena.
Jones led the Spartans one of the most successful seasons in the programs Division I history. He led the team during the 2021-22 season to its best 22 game start in Division I (17-5), back-to-back MEAC Tournament titles, and an undefeated home record (11-0).
NSU claimed the regular season MEAC title after finishing with a 12-2 record in the conference, securing the top seed in the MEAC Tournament. In the tournament, the Spartans picked up wins over Delaware State (74-66), Morgan State (72-63), and Coppin State (72-57) to claim the MEAC Championship.
The Spartans finished the year with a 24-7 record, falling to No. 4 Baylor in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Fort Worth, Texas.
This marks the second year in a row for Jones to be named the HBCU Division I Coach of the Year. Last season, he shared the award with Johnny Jones of Texas Southern.
The Hugh Durham Award was established in 2005 and was renamed from the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Coach of the Year Award in 2009 in honor of the coach who led programs at Florida State, Georgia, and Jacksonville. Durham is the only coach to be the winningest coach as three separate NCAA basketball programs.
The HBCU All-Star Game is playing its first-ever game this season and takes place in the same city as the Final Four and on the same weekend. Jones will lead a squad made up entirely of players from the MEAC and SIAC (Division II). He will be assisted by Fred Watson, the head coach at Miles College.
The Skip Prosser Man of the Year award honors those who not only achieve success on the basketball court but who display moral integrity off the floor as well. Jones is a previous winner of the award having been selected for the honor after the 2018-19 season. The Jim Phelan Award, which is presented annually to the nation's top Division I coach, is named in honor of a legendary bow-tied coach who spent his entire career at Mount Saint Mary's University.
