Howard Advances to MEAC Women’s Championship Game

NORFOLK, Va., March 11, 2022 –
Iyanna Warren matched her career high with 21 points, while Brooklyn Fort-Davis and Anzhane’ Hutton added 10 each to lead top-seeded Howard to a 68-54 win over fifth-seeded Maryland Eastern Shore Friday in semifinal action of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Basketball Tournament in the Scope Arena.
 
The Bison, one of three teams to tie for the MEAC regular-season championship, became the first team to earn a trip to Saturday’s finals. Howard, which improved to 19-9, will meet the winner of Friday’s second semifinal contest between second-seeded Norfolk State and Morgan State, the fifth seed.

Howard took advantage of its superior size advantage and dominance on the boards to build an 18-8 lead after one period. The Bison scored eight of the first 10 points of the second period, taking a 26-10 lead with 7:49 left in the period on two free throws by Kaniyah Harris, who finished with eight points and four assists for Howard.
 
The Lady Hawks scored the seven unanswered points to close the gap to single digits, 26-17, on a breakaway basket by Zamara Haynes, who led Maryland Eastern Shore with 18 points, with 6:45 left in the half. The Hawks got to within 32-24 with 3:05 left in the period but it was Howard ahead 37-25 at the break.
 
The Lady Hawks matched Howard’s 14 points in the third period, which ended with the Bison ahead 51-39. Howard scored 11 of the first 16 points of the final stanza to build its biggest lead, 62-44 with 7:25 showing and the closest Maryland Eastern Shore came after that was 11 points, 62-51 with 4:28 to play.
 
Amanda Carney had 13 points off the bench, including three baskets from beyond the arc, to follow Haynes in the scoring column for the Lady Hawks, who were outrebound by Howard 56-41 in the contest.
 
Krislyn Marsh had 14 rebounds for Howard and added and added six points and two blocks.
 
Maryland Eastern Shore, which ended its campaign at 12-16, was led on the boards by Angelique Taylor with eight. She also had five points in the loss.
