MEAC Announces Weekly Women’s Basketball Honors, presented by Coca-Cola

NORFOLK, Va., March 1, 2022Norfolk State senior guard Camille Downs was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola, the conference office announced today. Coppin State guard/forward Jewel Watkins and Delaware State center Unique Miller were named Co-Rookies of the Week, while Downs also earned Defensive Player of the Week honors.
 
Downs (5-10, Sr., G, Fredericksburg, Va.) averaged 18.5 points, 11.5 rebounds, 7.5 steals and 3.5 assists per game for the Spartans this past week, going a combined 14-for-34 (41%) from the floor. She was one steal shy of a triple-double on Saturday against South Carolina State, going for 15 points, 12 rebounds and nine steals (to go along with five assists), and on Monday, she dropped 22 points to go along with 10 rebounds, six steals and two assists, going 8-for-15 (53.5%) from the floor.
 
Watkins (5-11, Fr., G/F, Whitehall, Ohio) nearly averaged a double-double for the week, averaging 14.0 points and 8.5 rebounds a contest (along with 2.0 steals and 2.0 assists). She opened with an 18-point, 7-rebound, 2-steal effort on Saturday against Maryland Eastern Shore, before recording her first career double-double on Monday against Delaware State – going for 10 points and 10 boards, three assists and two steals.
 
Miller (6-1, Fr., C, Atlanta, Ga.) had the best game of her collegiate career on Monday against Coppin State, dropping a career-high 23 points and grabbing 14 rebounds after going 10-for-17 from the floor and a perfect 3-for-3 from the free throw line. For the week, Miller averaged 15.0 points and 11.0 rebounds a contest.

Mossi Staples (Coppin State) had 20 points, seven assists and six steals against Delaware State.
 
Nyla Cooper (Howard) scored 10 points against North Carolina Central.
 
Brooklyn Fort-Davis (Howard) notched double-doubles against North Carolina Central (14 points, 10 rebounds) and South Carolina State (13 points, 10 rebounds).
 
Krislyn Marsh (Howard) recorded a double-double (12 points, 11 rebounds) against South Carolina State, while also blocking four shots against North Carolina Central.
 
Brooklyn Bailey (Maryland Eastern Shore) dropped 15 points against Coppin State.
 
Mya Thomas (Maryland Eastern Shore) recorded a double-double (10 points, 12 rebounds) against Coppin State.
 
Jayla Atmore (Morgan State) grabbed four steals against Delaware State.
 
Charlene Shepherd (Morgan State) had 18 points and 12 rebounds against Delaware State.
 
Diamond Thomas (North Carolina Central) dropped 24 points against Norfolk State.
 
Nicole Gwynn (South Carolina State) had 17 points and six rebounds against Howard.
