MEAC Announces Weekly Softball Honors, presented by Coca-Cola

NORFOLK, Va., Feb. 28, 2022Norfolk State freshman Kenna Higa has been named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Softball Player of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola, it was announced on Monday. Meanwhile, Norfolk State junior Alexis Robinson and Maryland Eastern Shore redshirt freshman Tatum Kresley are the Pitcher of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively.
 
Higa (3B, 5-7, Fr., Honolulu, HI) hit .444 with three RBIs, two doubles, a home run and one stolen base in the Spartans’ four weekend games. In the 2-0 win over Wagner, she hit the game-winning, walk-off two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh. She recorded doubles against Youngstown State and Penn and scored the winning run in the 6-5 victory over Penn on Sunday. Higa also had a 1.000 slugging percentage for the weekend.
 
Robinson (P, 5-10, Jr., Virginia Beach, Va.) went 2-0 over the weekend, defeating Wagner 2-0 and Penn 6-5. In the Wagner game, she pitched 5.1 innings and struck out three batters in the Spartans’ first no-hitter since 2006. Against Ivy League opponent Penn, Robinson tossed the final 1.2 innings with two strikeouts to record the last two outs of the game.
 
Kresley (OF/P, 5-6, r-Fr., Alburtis, Pa.) hit .450 as the leadoff batter this weekend for the Hawks. She also had a triple, three runs scored and two RBIs. Additionally, she pitched 8.2 innings over two games with her best overall outing coming on Sunday versus Lafayette, when she pitched 6.2 innings with four strikeouts and went 2-4 with two runs at the plate.
 
Other Top Performers
Brooke Caballero (Coppin State) hit .400 with an RBI single and a two-run homer against Georgetown on Sunday.
 
Vanessa Carrizosa (Coppin State) pitched complete games against UMBC and Georgetown.
 
Jazlyn Sanchez (Coppin State) hit .444 in four weekend games and scored a run against UMBC on Saturday.
