MEAC Announces Weekly Women’s Basketball Honors, presented by Coca-Cola

NORFOLK, Va., Feb. 22, 2022Howard sophomore forward Anzhane’ Hutton was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola, the conference office announced today. North Carolina Central guard Diamond Thomas was named Rookie of the Week, while Coppin State redshirt sophomore guard Mossi Staples earned Defensive Player of the Week honors.
 
Hutton (6-0, So., F, Dallas, Texas) averaged a double-double with 16.5 points and 11.0 rebounds a contest, shooting a combined 48% (11-for-23) from the floor in helping the Bison vault to first place in the conference with wins over Morgan State and Coppin State. She had 14 points and 11 boards against Morgan State, before turning in a 19-point, 11-rebound, 3-assist, 2-block effort against Coppin State.
 
Thomas (5-4, Fr., G, Knightdale, N.C.) averaged 17.5 points a contest this past week, and she dropped a season-high 23 points on 8-for-18 shooting against Maryland Eastern Shore. She also had three assists and three rebounds in that contest.
 
Staples (5-7, r-So., G, Fort Washington, Md.) averaged 4.5 steals per game for the Eagles this past week. She grabbed a season-high six steals on Monday in a win over Norfolk State after notching three in Saturday’s contest against Howard.
 
Other Top Performers
Aliyah Lawson (Coppin State) had 20 points against Howard.
 
Jewel Watkins (Coppin State) had 10 points, six rebounds and three steals against Howard.
 
Janasia Law (Delaware State) scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds against North Carolina Central, then dropped 14 points against South Carolina State.
 
Brooklyn Fort-Davis (Howard) grabbed nine rebounds against Coppin State and seven against Morgan State.
 
Brooklyn Bailey (Maryland Eastern Shore) dropped 21 points against South Carolina State.
 
Kaia Ponder (Morgan State) had 10 points and seven rebounds against Howard.
 
Charlene Shepherd (Morgan State) dropped 21 points against Howard, before turning in a 14-point, 9-rebound, 5-block effort against Norfolk State.
 
Mahoganie Williams (Norfolk State) grabbed 10 rebounds, blocked three shots and notched a pair of steals against Morgan State.
 
Trinity Klock (South Carolina State) had 16 points and eight rebounds against Maryland Eastern Shore.
