MEAC Announces Weekly Softball Honors, presented by Coca-Cola

NORFOLK, Va., Feb. 21, 2022Norfolk State junior Imani Moore has been named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Softball Player of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola, it was announced on Monday. Meanwhile, Norfolk State senior Joana Vallejo and Howard freshman Alyssa Vasquez are the Pitcher of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively.


Moore (OF, 5-9, Jr., Los Angeles, Calif.) hit .571 in four games and added three runs, two RBIs, two doubles and one triple to help the Spartans to a 3-1 record in the Hampton University Classic. In the 10-1 win over St. Bonaventure, she was 3-for-3 with two runs, two RBIs, two doubles and a triple. In the second game against the Bonnies, she was 3-for-4 with a stolen base.
 
Vallejo (P. 5-5. R-Sr., Manassas, Va.) was 1-0 for the weekend after pitching 6.2 innings in the Spartans’ 8-3 win over Central Connecticut. She struck out seven batters, while only walking one and not allowing any earned runs.
 
Vasquez (OF, 5-5, Fr., Downey, Calif.) hit .667 in Howard’s three games for the weekend. She was 3-of-4 with two RBIs and a pair of doubles, including the game-winning RBI double, in the 6-5 victory over Quinnipiac on Friday. She was batted 2-of-3 with a double against Iowa State and then had a double and walk in Saturday’s win over Quinnipiac.
 
Other Top Performers
Camille Navarro (Howard) went 2-of-4 with two doubles, an RBI and run scored in Friday’s win over Quinnipiac and hit a solo homer against Iowa State.
 
Brierra Tyler (Norfolk State) went 1-0 on the weekend in two appearances, pitching 6.0 innings combined with four strikeouts and no runs allowed.
 
Jayla Barr (North Carolina Central) drove in a pair of runs against Presbyterian on Friday and knocked in two more runs in a 5-1 win over Detroit Mercy on Saturday.
 
Jaden Davis (North Carolina Central) went 1-0 on the week with a win in her only start against University of Detroit Mercy. She only allowed one run in her seven innings of work with five strikeouts for a 1.00 ERA in the win against the Titans.
