DURHAM, N.C. (Feb. 19, 2022) – The North Carolina Central University men's basketball program rallied from a 10-point deficit for the fifth time this year; this time, from 12 down with help from a game-tying three-pointer by Justin Wright with 3.1 seconds remaining to force overtime on the way to an 84-79 win over Delaware State on Saturday, Feb. 19, inside McDougald-McLendon Arena.
NCCU (14-11, 7-2 MEAC) led for just 3:05 in regulation, and that was all in the first half. DSU (2-21, 0-10 MEAC) knocked down four three-pointers in the first half, and built up a lead as big as eight; but the Eagles were able to halve the deficit to just four at 31-27 at the midway point.
NCCU inbounded the ball with 8.0 seconds remaining in regulation, and Wright was able to race up the floor, and hit a deep trey while falling away with 3.1 seconds left to send the game to an added period.
The game was tied at two separate points in the overtime period, but DSU continued to hold the advantage until a corner triple from Marque Maultsby with 1:12 left gave the Eagles their first lead since late in the first half. NCCU proceeded to close out the game by making all eight of its free throw attempts in overtime to secure the dramatic 84-72 victory.
Wright poured in a career-high 32 points, and scored 20 of those points in the final 25 minutes of the game. He made 10 field goals, and also came one board shy of a double-double with nine rebounds. Monroe crushed four treys, and dropped in 14 points with five boards, and Dontavius King secured a joint team-high nine boards with nine points. Eric Boone dished out a game-high seven assists with nine points, seven rebounds, and four steals.
Myles Carter supplied a big double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds for DSU, and John Stansbury also had a big game with 26 points and six boards. Both Stansbury and Dominik Fragala hit three treys for the Hornets, and Fragala finished with 14 points.
Howard 68, Morgan State 66
CLEVELAND, Ohio (February 19, 2022) – Howard University men’s basketball team erased a double-digit deficit to defeat long-time Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) rival Morgan State, 68-66, in the first-ever NBA HBCU Classic, held inside the Wolstein Center in Cleveland, as part of the NBA All-Star Weekend festivities.
With the victory, Howard (14-10, 7-3 MEAC) extended its win streak to six, while the Bears dropped to 8-13 (3-6 MEAC).
Kyle Foster led the Bison attack, finishing with a team-leading 18 points on 10-of-15 shooting at the foul line. Randall Brumant and Elijah Hawkins finished with 17 points apiece while Tai Bibbs netted 10 points in the win.
For Morgan State, De'Torrion Ware scored a game-high 19 points to pace Morgan State. Lagio Grantsaan and Chad Venning each finished with 11 points for the Bears.
South Carolina State 70, Maryland Eastern Shore 63
ORANGEBURG, S.C. (Feb. 19, 2022) — Freshman guard T.J. Madlock scored a game-high 18 points and had seven assists and four rebounds, while teammate Rahsaan Edwards added 17 points and five assists to lead South Carolina State to an 70-63 win over Maryland-Eastern Shore in MEAC play Saturday at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.
South Carolina State improved to 14-12 overall, 6-4 in the MEAC, while UMES falls to 8-13 overall, 3-7 in the league.
For the Bulldogs, freshman forward Jemal Davis added 14 points in the win.
Maryland-Eastern Shore's Kevon Voyles finished with a team-high 15 points, while Chace Davis added 12 in the loss.
Norfolk State 89, Coppin State 59
BALTIMORE, Md. (Feb. 19, 2022) – Redshirt senior Jalen Hawkins had a season-high 21 points while senior Joe Bryant Jr. tied his season high with a game-high 29 points to lead the Norfolk State men's basketball team to an 89-59 point win over Coppin State on the road in Baltimore, Md. in the Physical Education Center Arena.
Kris Bankston had a game-high 12 rebounds to pace the Spartan defense that gave up only 59 points, the lowest allowed since 58 points against Maryland Eastern Shore on January 17.
In addition to tying his season-high points, Bryant also tied a career-high six assists that he set last season against Delaware State.
Nendah Tarke and Justin Steers each scored in double figures for the Eagles wit 18 and 10 points, respectively.
