NORFOLK, Va., Feb. 14, 2022 – Howard freshman Alyssa Vasquez has been named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Softball Player of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola, it was announced on Monday. Meanwhile, Norfolk State junior Alexis Robinson and North Carolina Central freshman Jaidyn Hamby are the Pitcher of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively.
Vasquez (C/IF, 5-5, Fr., Downey, Calif.) hit .333 in four games and added six RBIs, two runs scored and a double. She went 2-for-5 with three RBIs and a run scored in Sunday’s win at North Carolina A&T State. In Saturday’s game against NCA&T, she produced two hits, including a double, after hitting a two-run single against Robert Morris earlier in the day. Vasquez also had a perfect fielding percentage for the weekend.
Robinson (P, 5-10, Jr., Virginia Beach, Va.) went 2-0 in three appearances for the Spartans over the weekend. She logged a total of 8.1 innings while striking out seven batters and ended the weekend with a 0.00 earned run average. She pitched 2.1 innings in relief against Hartford, holding the Hawks scoreless and striking out two.
Hamby (OF, 5-5, Fr., Fontana, Calif.) batted .417 for the weekend with five RBIs in four games. She hit a double and collected an RBI in the Eagles’ 2-1 win over Towson on Saturday and finished with a pair of hits in both games against UMass, while adding RBI in the second game.
Other Top Performers
Alyssa Watson (Howard) batted .333 with three RBIs, three runs scored and a double in four games for the Bison.
Amennah Ballenger (Maryland Eastern Shore) went 2-for-3 against Furman and Tarleton State.
Rebecca Miller (Maryland Eastern Shore) hit .500 (2-for-4) and scored a run against Furman.
Kenna Higa (Norfolk State) went 1-for-3 with a home run in the 5-4 win over Hartford.
Tuli Iosefa (Norfolk State) hit .385 in five games while helping the Spartans to a 3-2 record in the NSU-Hampton Classic.
Jaden Davis (North Carolina Central) pitched 16.2 innings, finishing the weekend with a 1-1 record, a 2.10 ERA and nine strikeouts. She also batted .250 with three hits, one home run and two RBI.
