MEAC Announces Men’s Basketball Weekly Honors, Presented by Coca-Cola

NORFOLK, Va., Jan. 18, 2022 Senior guard Joe Bryant, Jr. of Norfolk State has been selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, presented by Cola-Cola, it was announced on Tuesday. Delaware State junior center Christopher Sodom was selected as Defensive Player of the Week. Rookie of the Week honors went to freshman guard Elijah Hawkins of Howard.
 
Bryant, Jr. (G, 6-1, Sr., Norfolk, Va.) averaged 20.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game for the Spartans, going a combined 60% (14-for-23) from the floor, 57% (8-for-14) from 3-point range and a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Against South Carolina State, he dropped 22 points – all in the second half – on 8-for-11 shooting and a 6-for-8 effort from behind the arc, while also dishing out four assists. Against North Carolina Central, Bryant scored 18 points on 6-for-12 shooting, grabbed six boards and had three assists.
 
Sodom (C, 7-3, Sr., Washington, D.C.) set a new Delaware State program record with nine blocked shots against Morgan State, while also tying for the game high with nine rebounds (six defensive). His nine blocks are the most in a single game in the MEAC this season.
 
Hawkins (G, 5-11, Fr., Washington, D.C.) averaged 8.5 points per game this past week. His best game of the week came against North Carolina Central, when he scored nine points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out seven assists. He had eight points and three rebounds against South Carolina State.
 
Other Top Performers
Nendah Tarke (Coppin State) recorded a double-double against Maryland Eastern Shore with 10 points and 14 rebounds, to go along with eight assists and six steals.
 
Myles Carter (Delaware State) dropped 24 points and grabbed five rebounds against Morgan State.
 
Kyle Foster (Howard) dropped a career-high 27 points on 10-for-12 shooting against North Carolina Central, hitting five 3-pointers.
 
Steve Settle III (Howard) blocked three shots and recorded three steals against North Carolina Central.
 
Donchevell Nugent (Maryland Eastern Shore) scored a career-high 23 points against Morgan State, after turning in a 13-point, 8-rebound, 5-assist effort against Coppin State.
 
Nathaniel Pollard, Jr. (Maryland Eastern Shore) had 14 points, 10 rebounds, three blocks and three steals against Morgan State.
 
Kris Monroe (North Carolina Central) grabbed nine rebounds against Howard and seven against Norfolk State.
 
Justin Wright (North Carolina Central) dropped 20 points to go along with six rebounds and three assists in a win over Norfolk State, while also scoring 17 points and going 7-for-14 from the floor against Howard.
 
Jemal Davis (South Carolina State) shot 55% in two games and scored 19 points against Norfolk State.
 
T.J. Madlock (South Carolina State) scored 10 points against Howard.
 
Deaquan Williams (South Carolina State) grabbed 11 rebounds against Howard after turning in a nine-rebound, two-block effort against Norfolk State.
