MEAC Announces Weekly Women’s Basketball Honors, presented by Coca-Cola

NORFOLK, Va., Dec. 27, 2022Sophomore forward Kierra Wheeler of Norfolk State has been named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola, the league announced today. Sophomore guard Niya Fields of Norfolk State was announced as the Defensive Player of the Week.
 
Wheeler (6-1, So., F, Minneapolis, Minn.) averaged 11.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per contest in wins over William & Mary and UNCW last week. She scored 15 points and pulled down eight rebounds against the Seahawks, shooting 5-of-8 from the floor.
 
Fields (5-8, So., G, Peekskill, N.Y.) finished the week with 10 steals and five rebounds in the Spartans’ two games. She recorded a career-high seven steals against William & Mary and had three steals and three rebounds against UNCW, helping NSU win the rebound battle 42-38.

The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) is in its 52nd year of intercollegiate competition with the 2022-23 academic school year. Located in Norfolk, Va., the MEAC is made up of eight outstanding historically Black institutions across the Atlantic coastline: Coppin State University, Delaware State University, Howard University, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Morgan State University, Norfolk State University, North Carolina Central University and South Carolina State University.
