NORFOLK, Va. -- 
Freshman George Beale, Jr. made his collegiate debut by notching a double-double of 18 points and 14 rebounds, leading seven Norfolk State players in double figures in a 109-59 thrashing of Virginia-Lynchburg on Monday night at Echols Hall.

Kris Bankston added a double-double of his own with 16 points and 12 rebounds, scoring all of his points on an array of eight athletic dunks that energized the crowd. Cahiem Brown added 15 points, Daryl Anderson 14, MEAC Preseason Player of the Year Joe Bryant, Jr. 13, Jack Doumbia 11 and Christian Ings 10 for NSU.

The Spartans outshot VUL 51.8 percent to 30.8.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- 
Sam Sessoms scored a game-high 24 points in his Coppin State debut as the Eagles fell to Charlotte\82-59 in the season opener on Monday night at Halton Arena.
 
Sessoms' 24 points came on 10-for-15 shooting along with a pair of 3-pointers and 2-of-2 from the line.

Virginia Tech 95, Delaware State 57

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- 
Virginia Tech shot 55 percent from the field, including 50 percent on 3-point shots, to highlight its 95-57 men's basketball victory over Delaware State in the 2022-23 opener for each team at Cassell Coliseum this evening.

Delaware State was led by guard Khyrie Staten with a career-high 16 points (7-15 FG; 2-6 3pt), while newcomer Brandon Stone added 15 points (7-13 FG; 1-3 3pt) and topped the Hornets with eight rebounds.

No. 4 Kentucky 95, Howard 63

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- 
Kobe Dickson scored a team-high 19 points and Elijah Hawkins chipped in with 14, but it was not enough as Howard dropped its season opener, 95-63 to 4th ranked Kentucky in Rupp Areana.

The Bison (0-1) were competitive early on and stayed within striking distance at 29-18 with just under eight minutes remaining in the first half.

Old Dominion 84, Maryland Eastern Shore 65

NORFOLK, Va. -- 
Maryland Eastern Shore battled with Old Dominion at Chartway Arena on Monday night, but the Monarchs and foul trouble were too much to overcome as the Hawks fell 84-65.

The Hawks were not without their highlight performers. Zion Styles led the team with 18 points, finishing 4-for-7 from the field and burying three from range in the effort. Nathaniel Pollard was close behind, with 16 points and six rebounds in the game.

Xavier 96, Morgan State 73

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- 
Five Musketeers hit double figures as Xavier opened the 2022-23 season with win, topping Morgan State 96-73 at Cintas Center on Monday evening.

Isaiah Burke scored 16 points (5-12 FG) with four steals and David McCullough scored 16 points (6-9 FG) with three steals to lead Morgan (0-1). Malik Miller led the Bears on the glass with seven boards.

No. 18 Virginia 73, North Carolina Central 61

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- 
North Carolina Central erased a 16-point first half deficit with a 12-0 run in the second half to take a two-point lead with just under 15 minutes remaining, but No. 18 Virginia was able to surge past the Eagles to take a 73-61 decision in the season-opener at John Paul Jones Arena on Monday.

Justin Wright led the Eagles with an impressive 20 points as he went 3-for-3 from the arc, and tacked on two steals on defense. Eric Boone followed suit with 18 points with three steals and three assists.
