Defending MEAC champion Howard University kicked off the 2022-23 season at Burr Gymnasium on Monday, sending 1,169 fans home happy following a 62-57 win over La Salle.

Preseason First Team honoree Iyanna Warren led the way with 18 points, five rebounds and three assists, hitting 10 of her 12 free throws. Destiny Howell, who was also named Preseason First Team All-MEAC, added 15 points.

The victory marked Howard's second straight win over La Salle.

Morgan State 78, Shepherd 39

BALTIMORE, Md. --
Morgan State saw four players score in double figures on Monday evening, as the Lady Bears opened the 2022-23 season with a 78-39 win over Shepherd in Hill Field House.

Ja'Niah Henson led Morgan State with 16 points, hitting three of her four 3-pointers, and added four steals while Gabrielle Johnson added 13 points. Jael Butler chipped in 12 points and Taylor Addison added 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds.

The Lady Bears made eight of their 16 3-pointers and shot 48.2% from the floor.

Norfolk State 125, Virginia University of Lynchburg 19

NORFOLK, Va. --
Norfolk State opened the 2022-23 season in style Monday evening in Echols Hall, defeating Virginia University of Lynchburg 125-19 as the Spartans shot 57.8% from the floor and eight players scored in double figures.

Deja Francis led the way with 21 points and 10 assists, going 8-for-13 from the floor. Danaijah Williams added 16 points for the Spartans, while Camille Downs dropped 14 and Norfolk State got 13 points each from Kierra Williams (who also had 13 rebounds) and Alana Swift.

Makoye Diawara chipped in 12 points, and Skye Robinson (10 points, 14 rebounds) and Mahoganie Williams (10 points, 10 rebounds) each recorded double-doubles.

Lynchburg shot just 12% from the floor and committed 31 turnovers.

North Carolina Central 69, Johnson C. Smith 56

DURHAM, N.C. -- 
Sophomore Morgan Callahan scored 14 points and both junior Blessing Okoh and freshman Jemi Kiaku poured in 13 points to lead North Carolina Central to a 69-56 win in its home and season opener on Monday evening inside McDougald-McLendon Arena.
 
Callahan played nearly 37 minutes as she filled up the box score with 14 points, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals. Okoh tallied a double-double in her NCCU debut with 13 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Kiaku swished a trio of 3-pointers on the way to 13 points in her first collegiate contest.
 
The Eagles start 1-0 for the third time under the direction of sixth-year head coach Trisha Stafford-Odom.

Pitt 57, Coppin State 41

BALTIMORE, Md. -- 
Jewel Watkins scored a game-high 14 points, but it was not enough as Coppin State's women's basketball put up a great effort in a 57-41 loss to Pittsburgh in the Eagles' season opener on Monday night at PEC Arena.

The contest was Jermaine Woods' debut as head coach.

Michigan State 86, Delaware State 37

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- 
Delaware State University opened its 2022-23 season with an 86-37 road loss to the Spartans of Michigan State University on Monday.
 
Freshman guard Deyonce Thompson paced the offensive efforts with six points by way of a team-high two 3-pointers. She collected three rebounds and one steal to cap off her first game in a Delaware State uniform.

Miami 83, Maryland Eastern Shore 51

CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- 
Maryland Eastern Shore gave the University of Miami more than it probably expected in the first quarter on Monday, but eventually succumbed to the size and pressure of the Hurricanes in an 83-51 loss.

Sophomore Ariana Seawell led the Hawks on the glass with seven rebounds and added eight points.

GREENVILLE, N.C. --
The first game of the Tim Eatman era didn't go as South Carolina State had hoped on Monday, as the Bulldogs fell in their opener 71-35 to East Carolina at Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.

Gift Sampson led S.C. State with 11 points and seven rebounds.
