MEAC Title IX 50th Anniversary: Florida A&M, Howard Volleyball

The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) has crowned champions in women's volleyball since 1984, and in that span, two programs have won more conference championships and made more NCAA Volleyball Championship appearances than any other: Florida A&M and Howard.

Both programs have won 13 MEAC volleyball titles and have been the dominant teams for significant stretches of time.

For the Bison, success was immediate; Howard won the first two MEAC volleyball championships, in 1984 and 1985, and they racked up crowns in four of the first six years volleyball was a conference-sanctioned sport. In fact, the Bison scored seven of the MEAC's first 11 volleyball tournament crowns -- winning in 1984, 1985, 1987, 1989, 1991, 1993 and 1994.

Florida A&M won its first MEAC volleyball crown in 1988, then followed with titles in 1995, 1996 and 1999.

But for the Rattlers, MEAC supremacy really hit home beginning with the 2001 season. When FAMU won that championship with a sweep of Morgan State in the title match, it kicked off a string of nine consecutive tournament championships for the program. In six of those seasons, the Rattlers won the title match via sweep before moving on to represent the conference in the NCAA Volleyball Championship.

In all, FAMU leads the MEAC with 11 all-time NCAA appearances (1996, 1999, 2001-09). Howard is next with seven (1994, 2015-19, 2021). The Rattlers then made MEAC history in 2003, becoming the first program in conference history to win a match in the NCAA Volleyball Championship with a first-round victory over Winthrop. The following season, FAMU became the first nationally-ranked HBCU ever, coming in at No. 22 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top 25 poll.

The Bison are the current MEAC dynasty on the volleyball court; coming into the 2022 season, Howard was not just the defending champion -- the Bison had won six of the last seven MEAC championships, dating back to the 2015 season. During their run, the Bison defeated Florida A&M twice in the final (2016, 2017).
