MEAC Announces Weekly Women's Basketball Honors, presented by Coca-Cola

NORFOLK, Va., Nov. 22, 2022Morgan State senior guard Ja’Niah Henson was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola, the conference office announced today. Delaware State guard Savannah Brooks was named Rookie of the Week. Morgan State senior forward Sunshine McCrae was named Defensive Player of the Week.
 
Henson (5-3, Sr., G, Baltimore, Md.) went 10-for-15 from the floor and hit three 3-pointers to lead the Bears to a home win over Saint Peter’s on Friday, giving the program a 5-0 start to the season after turning in a game- and career-high 25 points to go along with four assists and a steal.
 
Brooks (5-9, Fr., G/F, Taneytown, Md.) helped lead the Hornets to their first two wins of the season this past week, averaging 10.5 points a contest and shooting a combined 34.8% (8-23) from the floor. Against Wilmington, she dropped 15 points to go along with two assists and two steals, and she also had a 6-point, 3-rebound, 2-assist, 2-steal effort against New Jersey City.
 
McCrae (6-1, Sr., F, Enola, Pa.) averaged 10.0 rebounds and 3.0 steals in a pair of Morgan State victories this past week, and of her 20 total rebounds, 10 of them were on the defensive end. She opened with 13 rebounds (eight defensive), four steals and a block against Washington Adventist, before grabbing seven boards and two steals against Saint Peter’s.
 
Other Top Performers
Jalynda Salley (Coppin State) grabbed nine rebounds, to go along with three blocks and a steal against Saint Peter’s.
 
Mossi Staples (Coppin State) dropped 21 points against Saint Peter’s, hitting three 3-pointers and grabbing three steals.
 
Tyshonne Tollie (Delaware State) averaged 13.0 rebounds per game in two victories for the Hornets, recording a double-double (12 points, 13 boards) against New Jersey City.
 
Denijsha Wilson (Delaware State) dropped 17 points against Wilmington on 7-for-12 shooting, while also grabbing four steals and dishing out four assists.
 
Deja Francis (Norfolk State) racked up 18 points against Appalachian State and 14 points, seven assists, six rebounds and four steals against Purdue Fort Wayne
