DOVER, Del., Nov. 18, 2022 – Alondra Maldonado led the way with 11 points as Delaware State swept North Carolina Central 3-0 (25-5, 25-20, 25-15) in the 2022 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Volleyball Championship quarterfinals at Memorial Hall Gym.
The second-seeded Hornets (22-6) will take on No. 2 seed Howard in Saturday’s 8:30 p.m. semifinal.
Maldonado, a First Team All-MEAC selection, had nine kills and hit .727 for the match, while also teaming up on four blocks. Sydney Lewis, Valeria Otero and Kelsie Dawson each added five kills.
The Hornets hit .307 for the match and held a 14-3 edge in service aces, while also holding North Carolina Central, the No. 6 seed, to minus-011 hitting.
Delaware State dominated the first set, jumping out to a 14-3 lead on an Otero service ace and then 19-4 when Dawson and Danielle Allen paired for a block. A 5-0 Hornets run closed out the set and gave host Delaware State the 1-0 match lead.
The Eagles led the second set 12-9, coming out of the gate much stronger. A Tori Wilson kill put NCCU up 14-11, but the Hornets answered by closing the set on a 14-6 run, winning the set after a Dawson kill.
That momentum carried into the third set, as Delaware State led 10-4 before the Eagles scored the next five points to cut the lead to 10-9. Delaware State answered with an 8-2 run to take an 18-12 lead on an Alayna Lacy service ace.
In all, the Hornets closed the third set on a 10-3 run to clinch the match.
Wilson led the Eagles (7-19) with eight kills.
