MEAC Title IX 50th Anniversary: Martha Bissah, Norfolk State

Norfolk State's Martha Bissah is one of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference's (MEAC) greatest cross country runners, regardless of gender. A native of Accra, Ghana, Bissah is the only woman in MEAC history to win the MEAC cross country individual title three consecutive years -- winning the gold medal in 2017, 2018 and 2019.

Bissah was an All-MEAC performer in cross country all four years (finishing fifth in 2021 to go along with her three titles), and she set the conference 5K championship race record in 2017, when she completed the course at the Delaware State Outreach & Research Center in 17 minutes, 16.3 seconds.

Only two women have won three individual MEAC cross country titles in their careers (consecutive or not): Bissah and Delaware State's Michelle Robinson (1987, 1989, 1990).

Bissah was also a two-time Outstanding Runner at the MEAC Indoor Track & Field Championships (2018, 2020), and she is the current MEAC record holder in the outdoor 1,500 meters (4:27.12 at the 2017 championship). In 2018, Bissah was a First Team All-American in the outdoor 800 meters, and she added Second Team All-America honors in that event in 2019.

She was also an All-American in 2020 in the indoor 800 meters.
