MEAC, Delaware State Set to Host 2022 Cross Country Championships

NORFOLK, Va., Oct. 24, 2022 – The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and Delaware State University will host the 2022 Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships on Saturday at the Delaware State Outreach & Research Center in Smyrna, Del.

The championships will begin with the men’s 8K race at 11 a.m., with the women’s 5K race following at 12 p.m. The top 15 runners from each race will be named All-MEAC.

Norfolk State is the two-time defending MEAC champion for both the men and the women, having swept the titles in both 2019 and 2021 (there was no championship held in 2020 due to effects from the COVID-19 pandemic). The Spartans’ Gidion Sigei has the fastest 8K time in the conference this season after running a 23:50.2 on Oct. 15 at the Panorama Farms Invitational – his second sub-24 minute time of the season.

In fact, the Spartans have the MEAC’s three fastest 8K times of the season; Regan Kimtai (formerly of North Carolina A&T State) is second-fastest with a 24:55.9 he ran on Sept. 30 in the Paul Short run, and defending individual champion Evans Cheruiyot is third with the 25:15.3 he ran in that same meet.

For the women, the Spartans’ Mercyline Kimaiyo posted the conference’s fastest 5K time in the Panorama Farms Invitational, turning in an 18:05.2. North Carolina Central’s Victoria Swepson has the second-fastest 5K time (18:48.7, UNC Wilmington Beach Bash) and Norfolk State’s Kara Grant is third with the 19:06.9 she ran at Panorama Farms.

Defending MEAC individual champion Jada Banks of South Carolina State is seventh in 5K times with the 19:24.0 she ran at the Queen City Invite on Sept. 23.

On Saturday morning, the MEAC will team up with Delaware State to recognize breast cancer survivors. The festivities will begin at 10 a.m.

The 2022 MEAC Cross Country Championships are free and open to the public. The Delaware State Outreach & Research Center is located at 884 Smyrna Leipsic Rd., Smyrna, DE, 19977.
