WASHINGTON, D.C., Oct. 13,2022 -- Howard women's volleyball moved to a 10-7 overall season record with a three-set sweep over American University Wednesday evening.
The defeat dropped the Eagles to a 12-9 season record.
Junior Jennifer Bolden set the tone early opening the game with a kill assisted by Kayla Diaz. The Bison went on a 4-0 unanswered run to secure the lead in the first set. Feeling the set slip away, the Eagles began to close the gap point by point tying the score 11-11.
AU overtook the Bison by one, that is before three consecutive kills by Howard gave the Bison the lead, 14-13. Kicking it up a notch, the Bison pulled away from the Eagles on another unanswered run to make it set point, 24-18.
American sealed its first set loss with a service error.
The Bison made the first break in the score once again when first-year Rya McKinnon opened the second set with an ace. The Eagles retaliated later in the set with a six-point run giving them a 9-5 lead over Howard. A pair of 3-0 and 4-0 runs set the stage for a Bison comeback. A dominant 6-0 run was the final push securing the second set win of 25-22.
The Bison opened the final set with an explosive 4-0 run. That was all the advantage Howard needed as the Eagles trailed throughout the set. A kill by Tamar Wells with the help of Diaz followed by Leah Reeves' service ace were the final blows in the 25-14 set win,
McKinnon led the attack with 15 kills, while junior Bolden held the defense with five blocks. Diaz added 39 assists to her season's stats.
