Bears Surge in Second Half, Defeat Delaware State

BALTIMORE, Md., Jan. 30, 2022 -- Malik Miller came off the bench to score 15 points to lead Morgan State to an 82-70 win over Delaware State on Sunday afternoon at Hill Field House.
 
Miller hit 5 of 13 shots from the floor, including 5 of 6 from the free throw line, to help the Bears (7-10, 2-3 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) rally from a 3-point halftime deficit. The victory snapped a three-game losing streak and improved Morgans' all-time record against the Hornets to 63-43.
 
Lagio Grantsaan had 14 points and nine rebounds for the Bears, while Keith McGee and Isaiah Burke added 12 points apiece.
 
Myles Carter paced Delaware State (2-15, 0-5) with a game-high 24 points on 8 of 16 shooting and had five rebounds. Dominik Fragala added 15 points and Corey Perkins had 11 points for the Hornets, who have now lost 13 games in a row. Senior 7-foot-3 center Chris Sodom registered a career-high nine blocks with nine rebounds and five points.

Corey Perkins hit a jumper to give the Hornets a 49-44 lead with 12:59 remaining, but Morgan turned up their defensive pressure in the second half and made it hard for the Hornets to bring the ball up the floor. A steal by Lagio Grantsaan led to a fastbreak layup by Seventh Woods to give the Bears a 58-50 lead. Morgan outscored the Hornets by a 14-1 margin during a five minute stretch. The lead grew to 65-54 following a layup by Keith McGee as the Bears cruised to victory.

Morgan scored 32 points off 26 Hornet turnovers and held a 38-27 advantage on the glass.
 
The Bears trailed 8-2 during the early going, before Morgan outscored the Hornets 23-3 and led 25-11 following a three-pointer by Isaiah Burke with 9:07 remaining in the half. The Hornets responded with a pair of three-pointers by Myles Carter and by D'Marco Baucum as part of a 10-2 run to cut the Bears lead to 27-21 (5:54).  Delaware State closed out the first stanza by outscoring the Bears 15-12 and a dunk by Chris Sodom gave the Hornets a 39-36 edge.

Morgan returns to action on Monday, when the Hears head to Princess Anne, Md. to face the Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks (6-9, 1-3). Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
