MEAC Announces Men’s Basketball Weekly Honors, Presented by Coca-Cola

NORFOLK, Va., Jan. 25, 2022 Redshirt freshman guard Nendah Tarke of Coppin State and sophomore guard Justin Wright of North Carolina Central have been selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men’s Basketball Co-Players of the Week, presented by Cola-Cola, it was announced on Tuesday. Redshirt junior forward Tyree Corbett of Coppin State was named Defensive Player of the Week, and Rookie of the Week honors went to freshman guard Elijah Hawkins of Howard.
 
Tarke (G, 6-4, 200, r-Fr., Gaithersburg, Md.) averaged 23 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game in two MEAC contests last week. He dropped a career-high 27 points and added six rebounds, five assists and two steals in the close loss at Norfolk State. Against Howard, Tarke tallied 19 points, including the 3-point play that sealed the win for the Eagles. He also added five boards, four assists and three steals against the Bison.
 
Wright (G, 6-1, 200, So., Greenville, N.C.) led NCCU to a 2-0 start in conference play by averaging 20.5 points per game, scoring 20 points or more in consecutive games for the first time in his career. He contributed a career-high 21 points at Maryland Eastern Shore with a game-high-tying six rebounds, and team-best-tying five assists. Wright finished with 20 points and five assists against Delaware State. For the week, he averaged 5.0 assists and 4.0 rebounds per game, while shooting 61.1 percent from the floor (11-for-18), 57.1 percent from the arc (4-for-7), and 93.8 percent from the free throw line (15-for-16).
 
Corbett (F, 6-7, 200, r-Jr., Philadelphia, Pa.) averaged 18 rebounds and 22 points in the Eagles’ two games. He grabbed 22 rebounds and had 25 points, two steals and a block in the win over Howard, with one of the two steals leading the game-winning basket by Tarke. Against the Spartans, Corbett finished with 14 rebounds and 19 points.
 
Hawkins (G, 5-11, 160, Fr., Washington, D.C.) posted 20 points, a career-high six steals and added four assists in the road win over Morgan State. He followed that performance with a 19-point, three-rebound outing at Coppin State. In the two games, he averaged 19.5 points, 3.5 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 3.0 steals in 30 minutes per game.
 
Other Top Performers
Dominik Fragala (Delaware State) finished with 14 points and five rebounds against South Carolina State.
 
Christopher Sodom (Delaware State) had 10 rebounds and four blocks against South Carolina State.
 
Steve Settle III (Howard) averaged 18 points per game for the week, including a 21-point effort in the win over the Bears.
 
Randall Brumant (Howard) had a season-high 22 points on 10-of-12 shooting, including a pair of blocks, in the road victory at Morgan State and added 10 points, six boards and a season-high three blocks at Coppin State.
 
Jalen Hawkins (Norfolk State) averaged 19.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.0 steals in the Spartans' wins over Coppin State and Morgan State, while shooting 46 percent from the floor, 43 from 3-point range and 83 from the free throw line for the week.
 
Dontavius King (North Carolina Central) averaged 13.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game at for the week. Finished with 17 points with seven boards against the Hornets.
 
Jemal Davis (South Carolina State) averaged 11.7 points and eight rebounds the Bulldogs’ three wins last week.
 
Antonio “TJ” Madlock (South Carolina State) averaged 12.6 points and 3.3 rebounds per game for the Bulldogs.
