MEAC Announces Weekly Women’s Basketball Honors, presented by Coca-Cola

NORFOLK, Va., Jan. 18, 2022Coppin State redshirt sophomore guard Mossi Staples and South Carolina State freshman guard Nicole Gwynn were selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Women’s Basketball Co-Players of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola, the conference office announced today. Gwynn was also named Rookie of the Week, while Howard sophomore forward Anzhane’ Hutton earned Defensive Player of the Week honors.
 
Staples (5-7, r-So., G, Fort Washington, Md.) dropped a career-high 21 points on 6-for-11 shooting (55.0%), hitting both 3-point attempts as Coppin State edged past rival Morgan State on Saturday in the MEAC opener for both teams. Staples had a strong all-around game, grabbing five steals and dishing out four assists – including a swipe-and-score in the closing seconds of the contest.
 
Gwynn (5-9, Fr., G, Wethersfield, Conn.) dropped a career-high 26 points on Saturday, going 7-for-14 from the floor (50.0%) and hitting six 3-pointers as the Bulldogs won their MEAC opener over North Carolina Central. She added six rebounds and a pair of assists.
 
Hutton (6-0, So., F, Dallas, Texas) averaged 9.5 rebounds and 2.0 blocked shots in two games for the Bison this past week, and of her 19 combined rebounds, 14 (7.0 per game) came on the defensive end. She tied her career high with 15 rebounds (10 defensive) and blocked two shots against Frostburg State, before adding two more blocks and four defensive boards against Maryland Eastern Shore.
 
Other Top Performers
Destiny Howell (Howard) dropped 20 points and hit six 3-pointers against Maryland Eastern Shore.
 
Nia Nelson (Howard) came off the bench for 10 points and five rebounds against Frosttburg State.
 
Taylor Addison (Morgan State) had 18 points and nine rebounds, going 6-for-6 from the floor against Coppin State.
 
Dahnye Redd (Morgan State) blocked three shots against Coppin State.
