PRINCESS ANNE, Md. -- The Howard University women's basketball team dominated the Hawks of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore 67-52 on Monday afternoon in Hytche Arena.
Howard improved to 7-6, 1-0 MEAC, and UMES fell to 4-9, 0-1 MEAC.
UMES' Mya Thomas got the scoring started with a jumper; however, Howard answered with an 11-3 run, capped off by a pair of Iyanna Warren free throws to extend the lead, 11-5 with 6:15 left on the clock. The two squads would trade baskets the rest of the first quarter, with the Bison having a 19-11 lead after the first quarter.
The Hawks opened the second quarter on an 8-3 run to close the gap, 22-19 with 5:00 remaining in the first half. Undeterred Howard closed the half on a 13-8 run to take a 35-27 lead.
The Bison carried the momentum into the second half, jumping out to a 13-5 run with 4:19 left in the third quarter to extend the lead, 48-32. Howard closed the third quarter leading 55-38.
Destiny Howell recorded a game-high 20 points, her third 20-point output of the season. Anzhane' Hutton (11) and Iyanna Warren (14) joined Howell in double-figure scoring. The Bison physicality put Howard at the charity stripe 32 times, connecting 23 times for a 71.9 free throw percentage. Howard out rebounded UMES 42-38.
he Bison led for 36:49. Howard also recorded 16 points off of turnovers and 13 second-chance points.
With the win, head coach Ty Grace inches closer to her 100th win at Howard, only needing eight to reach the milestone.
