Coppin State 67, Morgan State 65

BALTIMORE, Md. -- 
A layup by Colleen Bucknor with 40 seconds left put Coppin State up for good in a 67-65 victory over archrival Morgan State on Saturday afternoon at the Bears' Hill Field House.

The Eagles evened their record at 7-7 overall with a win in their MEAC opener, while Morgan State fell to 6-5.
 
Trailing by a point, Coppin worked the ball around the perimeter before Aliyah Lawson drove inside and found Bucknor for the open bucket on the left side. The dime was one of Lawson's career-high seven assists on the day.

Mossi Staples led all players with a career-high 21 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Staples made both of her threes and 7-of-10 from the stripe to go with five assists and four steals. She also put the game away in the closing seconds with a steal and breakaway layup to give Coppin a 67-63 lead.
 
Jalynda Salley and Jaia Alexander also finished in double figures with 14 and 12 points, respectively, while combining for 14 rebounds. Alexander finished with a team-high eight rebounds and was credited with three steals.

ORANGEBURG, S.C. --
Nicole Gwynn poured in a career-high 26 points as South Carolina State got in the win column for the first time this season on Saturday with a 63-51 win in the Lady Bulldogs' MEAC opener against North Carolina Central.

Gwynn was 7-for-11 from the floor and hit six of her 11 3-pointers, while adding six rebounds and two assists. Mekayla Lumpkin added 11 points and four assists.

Victoria Jordan pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds.

Kira Lowery led North Carolina Central with 12 points, while Tianna Carter added 10.

FROSTBURG, Md. -- 
The Howard University women's basketball program shook the cobwebs off after a 28-day hiatus, cruising past Frostburg State 100-53 Saturday afternoon in Bobcat Arena.

Six players scored in double-figures: Krislyn Marsh (17), Anzhane' Hutton (15), Kaiya Creek (14), Brooklyn Fort-Davis (14), Destiny Howell (12) and Nia Nelson (10).
