NORFOLK, Va., Sept. 27, 2021—
Coppin State senior Miajavon Coleman and
North Carolina Central senior Ammaarah Williams were selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Volleyball Co-Players of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola, the conference office announced today.
Morgan State’s Madison Grace was named Rookie of the Week, while
Coppin State junior Andrea Tsvetanova and
North Carolina Central sophomore Lauren Janok shared Setter of the Week honors and
Coppin State junior Ashley Roman was named Defensive Player of the Week.
Coleman (5-10, Sr., OH, San Antonio, Texas) became the first player in Coppin State history to have a 20-kill/20-dig match, going for 24 kills and 23 digs in the Eagles’ five-set thriller against North Carolina Central. She also had 21 kills and 16 digs against defending America East champion UMBC, and for the week, Coleman hit .379 while averaging 4.8 kills and 3.7 digs per set.
Williams (6-0, Sr., MB, Cleveland, Ohio) averaged 4.4 kills per set in helping the Eagles open MEAC play 2-0, hitting .304 for the weekend and proving to be an all-around presence on the court. She opened with a career-high 21 kills, 12 digs and two service aces against Morgan State, before turning in 19 kills, four blocks and two aces in a five-set win over Coppin State.
Grace (5-10, Fr., OH, Clinton Township, Mich.) averaged 4.1 kills per set over the weekend, opening with an 18-kill performance against North Carolina Central before adding 11 more kills in a sweep of South Carolina State. Grace hit .271 for the weekend.
Tsvetanova (5-9, Jr., S, Sofia, Bulgaria) posted two double-doubles in three matches, averaging 10.5 assists per set for the week. She opened with 44 assists and 12 digs against UMBC and ended the week with 60 assists – the third-most in program history for a single match – and 10 digs in a five-set thriller against North Carolina Central. She also had 22 assists and eight service aces against South Carolina State.
Janok (5-11, So., S, Rougemont, N.C.) averaged 10.7 assists per set and had two double-doubles as the Eagles opened MEAC play with wins over Morgan State and Coppin State. In Friday’s match against the Bears, she had 48 assists, 11 digs, four service aces and five kills, while Sunday saw her rack up 48 assists, a career-high 23 digs, three aces and seven kills.
Roman (5-5, Jr., L, Isabela, Puerto Rico) racked up 23 digs twice this past week, against UMBC and against North Carolina Central, while also recording nine in a straight-set win over South Carolina State. For the week, she averaged 4.6 digs per set.
Other Top Performers
Ahzhi Coleman (Coppin State) recorded eight kills and three blocks against UMBC.
Malgorzata Andersohn (Delaware State) recorded double-doubles against Howard (27 assists, 12 digs) and Norfolk State (23 assists, 13 digs).
Jasmal Cruz (Delaware State) had 20 digs against Howard and 12 against Norfolk State.
Alondra Maldonado (Delaware State) hit a combine .554 against Howard and Norfolk State, racking up 18 kills against the Bison and 15 against the Spartans.
Cimone Woodard (Howard) had 17 kills against American and totaled six blocks against Delaware State.
Trinity Carruthers (Morgan State) racked up 36 assists against South Carolina State.
Jadore Hayes (Morgan State) had 23 digs against North Carolina Central and 15 against South Carolina State.
Gabriela Hiciano (Morgan State) had 11 kills and 11 digs against North Carolina Central.
Nicole Rodriguez (Norfolk State) racked up 21 digs against Maryland Eastern Shore and 18 against Delaware State.
Maria Julia Vedovatto Lourerio (South Carolina State) had 10 kills against Coppin State and nine against Morgan State.
