NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Federico Rebecchini won the A singles flight last weekend at the CNU Invitational as the Norfolk State men's tennis team opened its fall schedule in style.
Rebecchini defeated Segovia Perez of North Carolina Wesleyan 7-5, 6-3 in the final round. Rebecchini defeated opponents from N.C. Wesleyan and Wesley College to advance to the finals.
Santiago Rendon advanced to the B singles flight final but dropped an epic third-set tiebreaker to John Falke of N.C. Wesleyan. Falke won 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (11) in the finals.
Rebecchini and Rendon also advanced to the A doubles flight final before succumbing to a team from N.C. Wesleyan.
In addition, the doubles tandem of Ivan Ivars and Ibrahim Abbas won a round in the consolation back draw in the B doubles flight.
"I am very pleased with the performanes from Fede and Santi this past weekend in both singles and doubles," head coach Larry Holmes said. "This was a good start to the season for them and a real confidence boost. Abbas and Ivars played well, just ran into some good players. Overall, I thought we played well considering we started the fall season just one week ago."
The Spartans are back in action the weekend of Sept. 24 at the RW Johnson Classic in Petersburg, Va.
