SIMSBURY, Conn. — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore opened its season last weekend in the Ryan T. Lee Memorial Collegiate. The tournament was hosted by Fairfield University and had a total of 15 schools compete.

The event saw four players – sophomore Tyler McDonald and freshmen Logan Kiley, Andrew Scinta and Michael Davis – make their debuts as members of the Hawks. Head coach Billy Dillon was also coaching his first tournament as the men's golf coach as the team opted out of the 2020-21 season.

"The team played about the way I expected. We finished 14 out of 15 teams, but averaged 77.5 shots per player for the eight scores that counted. I can't be too upset about that," Dillon said. "The guys know we simply need to improve our short game, especially putting.   Once we get everyone's confidence up, I expect to see our average score per player come down."

Kiley had the lowest score for the team as he finished with a 74 on both days to complete the tournament with a 148 (+4). McDonald followed that with a 74 and a 78 to finish with a 152 (+8).

Senior Brant Gillespie completed the tournament with a score of 153 (+9). He had the squad's lowest round of the weekend after shooting a 73 (+1) in his second round. Scinta had a 168 (+24) for the event and Davis finished with a 170 (+30).

The Shore will now travel to Raleigh, N.C. on Sept. 23-25 for the HBCU Invitational. The event will be played at Eagle Ridge Golf Club.
