EMITTSBURG, Md., Sept. 12, 2021 – Howard University men's tennis showed promise at the Mountaineer Invitational. The three-day event was held on the campus of Mount St. Mary's University.
"Our guys took a huge step this weekend," Director of Tennis Nicholas Askew said. "For Justin and Daniel to reach the championship match, that's big. Bison Tennis is trending in the right direction."
DAY 1
In the preliminary round, freshmen Marcel Dawson and Hassimiyou Dieng defeated Saint Francis's (SFU) Varella and Ghigiarelli, 2-1.
Junior Romani Mayers and sophomore Gabe Knowles fell to SFU's Banti and Fuste in the prelims, 1-2.
In the Round of 16, senior Kyle Martin and junior Phoenix Williams dropped a tough bout to the Mount's Jarrett Karnibad, Marcel Cronin and Pablo Martinez Zuccardi, 1-2.
DAY 2
Dawson and Dieng knocked off the Mount's Giovanni Abriola and Elliot Stevens in the Round of 16, 2-1, and moved on to the quarterfinals.
Sophomore Justin Cadeau and newcomer Daniel Dunac rallied to down Duquesne's (DU) Alex Mascioli and Liam Wickwire in singles competition, 2-1, and advanced to the quarterfinals.
In the quarterfinals, Dawson and Dieng topped George Mason's Faisal Alredbdi and Chanasorn Nakaurai, 2-1, while Cadeau and Dunac swept the Patriots' Hayden Postin and Dustin Ha, 3-0.
DAY 3
Cadeau and Dunac advanced to the championship match after defeating teammates Dawson and Dieng, 2-1.
In the championship match, Cadeau and Dunac came up short, falling to DU's Alejandro Rodriguez-Vidal and Tamirlan Teberikov, 1-2.
