Delaware State Men, Women Win Season-Opening Meet

SMYRNA, Del. -- 
The Delaware State University men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2021 season with a win at the DSU Sting Invite on Saturday.

Maria Garcia Rabago led the Hornet women with a second-place finish, running a time of 22:57.00. Jenna Blauser picked up a top-five finish of her own; her time of 23:26.70 placed her in a tie for fifth overall.

On the men's side, freshman Devin Smith led the way with a first-place finish in the first race of his collegiate career, recording a time of 18:13.10.

Morgan State's Field Wins DSU Sting Invite

SMYRNA, Del. -- 
Rachel Field captured the Delaware State Sting Invite 5,300-meter run individual title in a time of 22:23.50 on Saturday at the DSU Farm Course, in Smyrna, Del., hosted by Delaware State University.
 
As a team, the Lady Bears would finish third with 62 points. Host Delaware State scored 34 points to win the team title, placing four runners in the top-10.

Coppin State (53 points) finished second and Maryland Eastern Shore (79 points) was fourth.

The Morgan State men were runners-up in the team standings. Freshman standout Jackson Waller paced the way for the Bears, as he finished the 5,300-meter run in a time of 18:15.30, and was edged out at the finish line by race champion Devin Smith.

North Carolina Central Men Win UNCW Beach Bash

WILMINGTON, N.C. -- 
The North Carolina Central cross country teams returned to action in impressive fashion, earning a combined six top-10 finishes at the UNCW Beach Bash, hosted by UNC Wilmington on Friday night.
 
The men's unit won the 5k event behind four top-10 finishes and a combined 1:27:52 mark. Senior Juan Rodriguez led the pack and finished first in the event with a time of 16:59.95. Sophomore Leroy Scarver crossed the line with a time of 17:13.78 to earn third place.

Coppin's Monroque, Ba Lead Respective Races at DSU

SMYRNA, Del. -- 
Coppin State's Kamillah Monroque and Amadou Ba finished third in their respective races to lead the Coppin State cross country teams at the DSU Invitational on Saturday morning at Delaware State Outreach & Research Center.

The women's squad took second of four teams, while the men finished third of four squads.
 
Monroque was the first of three-straight Eagles to finish, covering the 5,400-meter course in 22:58.8, just ahead of teammates Saidai Stuteley and Jahmei Wyatt, who finished fourth and fifth in times of 23:05.8 and 23:26.7, respectively.

Ba clocked a 18:29.3, finishing just 16 seconds behind the winner, with Amiri Goode coming in second for the Eagles in 21:22.2, which was good enough for 15th overall.

Maryland Eastern Shore Returns to Action in Delaware

SMYRNA, Del. --
The Maryland Eastern Shore cross country squad ran in its first competition since Oct. 31, 2019 on Saturday morning at the Delaware State Farm Course —  which actually ended up being a 5.3K competition.

While a fourth-place finish for the men and women wasn't what the team was looking for, there were positives to be found.

For the women, newcomer Laura Menendez finished ninth with a time of 24:02.1. Fellow sophomore Dominique Spann turned in a 15th-place performance with a 25:45.0. Senior Asshanni Robb came in 19th with a 26:46.7.

Senior Edwin Kipruto was 10th for the men and junior Fasil Amado came in at No. 14 (21:00.6). Sophomore Jalen Gourrier was 17th in his Shore debut with a 21:44.7.

Norfolk State Opens Season at George Mason

FAIRFAX, Va. -- 
The Norfolk State men's and women's cross country teams got to shake the rust off after not being able to compete in almost two years due to COVID-19, running in the season-opening George Mason Invitational.

Five Spartans attacked the 8,000-meter race and were led by junior Meshack Kipchirchir, who finished sixth overall. He ran an average mile of five minutes, 37 seconds and finished the race in 27 minutes, 55 seconds.

On the women's side, junior Fridah Koech led the Green and Gold force with a sixth-place finish. She finished the 5,000-meter course in 20:03.2.

The next Spartan to cross the finish line was junior Faith Jemutai, who placed 11th in 21:37.4.
