STATESBORO, Ga. -- 
Miajavon Coleman led all players with 14 kills and 12 digs for a double-double, leading Coppin State to a season-opening 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-20) victory over Bethune-Cookman on Friday afternoon at the Bash in the Boro Tournament, hosted by Georgia Southern University.
 
With the win, head coach Tim Walsh now stands alone with a school-record 41 career victories, surpassing Ashley Preston, who now serves as the head coach at University of New Orleans.
 
A senior from San Antonio, Texas, Coleman hit .250 for the match with just six errors on 32 swings. Coleman, who tallied an impressive eight kills in the first set, also added a pair of blocks for 15 total points.
 
Sydney Hicks added seven kills, while Hope Casel and Jordan Celestine recorded five kills apiece to lead the Eagles attack. Celestine also had a match-high four blocks, moving her into fifth place on the Coppin all-time list with 170 in her career.

Celestine's final block which came late in the third set, broke a tie for fifth place with Salena Weekly ('11).
 
Andrea Tsvetanova quarterbacked the Eagles offense to a .204 hitting percentage with 22 assists along with three aces as she split time at setter with Kareemah Hopkins who added nine assists. Making her Coppin debut, Tsvetanova also recorded three aces.

DOVER, Del. --
Valeria Otero racked up 11 kills, and Alondra Maldonado added 10, as Delaware State swept Saint Peter's 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-16) in Memorial Hall on Friday.

Otero, a Preseason All-MEAC honoree, hit .476 for the match.

Adriana Rodriguez, with six kills and just one error in eight swings, hit a team-best .625 for the Hornets, who are coming off a 2020 season that saw them go 11-5 and earn their first conference tournament berth since 2010.

Maria Caratini led the Hornets with 11 digs.

WASHINGTON, D.C. --
Howard University used a balanced offensive attack on Friday to tip off the 2021 season with a 3-0 (25-23, 28-26, 25-18) win over George Washington at Burr Gymnasium.

Jennifer Bolden led the Bison with 11 kills, while Tamar Wells and Cimone Woodard each added nine. Bria Woodard added eight kills, with seven more coming from Kendall Smith.

Woodard and Taylor Johnson also had 11 digs apiece.

Howard hit .252 for the match, while holding GW to just .136 hitting.

Maryland Eastern Shore appeared to have secured an emotional win in five sets on Friday after an apparent kill from junior Derionah Abner. However, a successful challenge by Robert Morris kept the match going and the Colonials eventually got the win.
