PRINCESS ANNE, Md. — The Maryland Eastern Shore volleyball team knew it wanted to create an environment that felt a little more home and a little more welcoming. They wanted to upgrade their locker room, make it a place the team was even more comfortable and could showcase some the team's past accomplishments and players. But the cost of completely refurbishing a locker room is quite an undertaking, especially coming during the ongoing pandemic.

In stepped SettleHelp.org. — a non-profit 501 c(3) foundation, which organizes and runs The Settle Memorial Golf Tournament held in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. This year's event is on October 8, 2021 at the Oak Creek Golf Club.

"Our goal is to raise $20,000.00 for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Volleyball locker room renovation project," said Steve Settle, Jr. founder of the event and son of Steve Settle, Sr. whom the tournament is named in honor of. "We have always tried to use this tournament to give back to HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities). We have donated to my dad and mom's alma mater, Elizabeth City State, but this is also special as my niece and dad's granddaughter Mauri [Carver] is on the Hawk's volleyball team."

"We are honored that Settle Helps has chosen our University and our team," head women's volleyball coach Trevor Callarman said. "Not only will this greatly benefit our program and each one of the players, but it speaks to the 'family' approach of our team. To know that our team captain, Mauri and her family are willing to do this for us, words cannot express how grateful we are. This kind act will help our program and department for years to come."

"I hope our Hawk alumni, friends, faculty and staff will make an effort to support this great event by playing or by sponsoring it," Keith Davidson, Director of Athletics, said. "It warms my heart to know that we can provide the kind of experience to our student-athletes that inspires their families to want to help even more. We know that we offer a wonderful chance to get an education and to compete, but sometimes, we can't provide in some of other ways we would like to. For Mauri, her Uncle Steve and the whole Settle family to come forward and want to help shows the kind of selfless behavior we hope we inspire in all our student-athletes. We can't thank them enough."

The website, settlehelps.org is open now for golf and sponsor registration for the event. There is an early bird special price of just $125 per single golfer through the end August 27th. A special event for the non-golfer, Putt-and-lunch, is available for just $50.

The format is a 2-Man Scramble (2 players per team) and has prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each flight.  Flights will be groupings, determined by the number of entries.  Sponsorship opportunities are available, ranging from $100-$1,000.
