MEAC Weekly Volleyball Notes
NORFOLK, Va., Aug. 23, 2021—The 2021 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) volleyball season begins this weekend, with seven of the league’s eight member institutions scheduled to compete in 22 non-conference matches.
Delaware State and Morgan State will host home tournaments over the weekend; the Bears will play four matches over two days in Hill Field House, taking on Cleveland State, Towson, Binghamton and Navy, while Delaware State will be in Memorial Hall to face Saint Peter’s, Bucknell and Saint Francis Brooklyn.
Howard will be home on Friday and Saturday, welcoming George Washington and Georgetown to Burr Gymnasium before hitting the road on Sunday to take on George Mason.
Coppin State, Maryland Eastern Shore, North Carolina Central and South Carolina State will each be on the road for their season-opening tournaments. The Hawks will be on the court for the first time since the 2019 season after UMES had opted out of all competition in 2020-21.
Norfolk State will open its season on Tuesday, at home against Hampton.
Coppin State, which won the MEAC Northern Division regular-season title in 2020 for the first time ever and advanced to the MEAC Championship title match, was selected as the preseason favorite in a poll conducted by the league’s head coaches and sports information directors. The Eagles also boast MEAC Preseason Player of the Year Ashley Roman, who was joined on the Preseason All-MEAC team by Miajavon Coleman and Kareemah Hopkins.
Delaware State’s Sydney Lewis and Valeria Otero, Howard’s Tamar Wells and North Carolina Central’s Ammaarah Williams rounded out the Preseason All-MEAC team.
Howard, which won MEAC championships from 2015-19, was picked to finish second in the preseason poll, followed by Delaware State in third. Maryland Eastern Shore and Morgan State were tied for fourth, with North Carolina Central, Norfolk State and South Carolina State rounding out the poll.
Conference play is set to begin on Friday, Sept. 24. There will be no divisional play this season, and every school will play each other twice during the regular season. All eight schools will compete in the 2021 MEAC Volleyball Championship, which will be held Nov. 19-21 at Howard University in Washington, D.C.
