LEXINGTON, Ky., July 23, 2021 – The United States Marine Corps (USMC) and the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) revealed its 2021 Team Academic Award where Howard University was selected for its academic excellence for the 2020-21 season. The announcement came Monday.

The award, initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors volleyball teams that maintain a year-long grade point average (GPA) of 3.30 on a 4.0 scale or 4.10 on a 5.0 scale.

Collectively, the Bison accumulated a 3.7 GPA during the academic year.

"We are very proud of our team's dedication and perseverance to their studies last season," head volleyball coach Shaun Kupferberg said. "To achieve a 3.7 GPA under such circumstances is truly remarkable and a tribute to their mental fortitude and resolve. We would also like to recognize Brianna Clark, Paul Bowden and the rest of the academic support staff on their tremendous work with these student-athletes."

Overall, the USMC and AVCA recognized 1,275 collegiate and high school teams throughout the country.

"Even though teams might not have played during their usual season or may not have competed at all during the past year, coaches still found ways to lead their players to academic excellence." AVCA Executive Director Kathy DeBoer said. "This is a testament to the important role volleyball coaches play in their players success both on and off the court."
