BALTIMORE – Coppin State's softball team dropped a pair of games to Morgan State in its season finale on Sunday afternoon at CSU Softball Field. The Bears won game one, 11-2, and the nightcap, 5-2.
Prior to the doubleheader, head coach
Ashley Cook honored her four seniors who played in their final home games with the Eagles:
Soraya Valdez-Frick,
Sydney Dombrowski,
Nia Bowe and
Haley Bravo.
Game One
Morgan State scored six runs in the opening inning as an error led to a pair of unearned runs for the Bears off starting pitcher
Vanessa Carrizosa.
Maren Bernal relieved Carrizosa midway through the frame and got all three outs.
Coppin got one run in its half of the first on Nia Bowe's double to left field, scoring
Brissa Alvarado who doubled to start the frame.
Bernal held the Bears scoreless in the second, but two errors and three hits allowed Morgan to score five in the third to take an 11-1 lead.
Carrizosa returned to the circle to start the fourth and retired the side in order before throwing a scoreless fifth.
The Eagles attempted to rally in the fifth and got a run on an RBI double from
Ashley Weimann but left two runners on as Morgan took the opening game.
Game Two
Carrizosa also started game two on the rubber, but Morgan scored a pair of unearned runs to start the game. She then struck out the side in the second, got a 1-2-3 third inning and threw a scoreless fourth before Coppin was able to get on the board.
Desiree Carrizosa got the fourth started with a slap single through the left side, and she was followed by back-to-back singles from Bowe and Bravo. Weimann was then plunked by a pitch to score a run, and Dombrowski drew a walk to score another run.
Morgan then made a pitching change and forced a 5-2-3 double play and a groundout to get out of the inning.
The Bears retook the lead with two runs in the fifth as
Kayleigh Reome relieved
Vanessa Carrizosa in the circle and got the final out of the inning.
CSU got a pair of runners on in its half of the fifth, and after both teams went 1-2-3 in the sixth, Morgan added another run in the seventh.
Bowe led the way for Coppin with a pair of hits in the nightcap.
Vanessa Carrizosa took the loss despite allowing just two earned runs in 4.2 innings. Reome gave up just one run over the final 2.1 innings.
