North Carolina Central Advances to MEAC Softball Championship Game

NORFOLK, Va., May 14, 2021—
North Carolina Central advanced to the 2021 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Softball Championship game by eliminating Norfolk State, 5-2 on Friday evening at NSU Softball Field.
 
The Eagles will face Morgan State at 12 p.m. for a chance to claim their first MEAC Softball Championship. The game will be streamed live on FloSoftball.
 
Norfolk State saw its season end at 20-19.
 
Joirea Dumas scored the first run of the game in the first after a solo home run over the wall in right center field. North Carolina Central (13-30) would add a run in the fifth, when K’Lea Parks scored on a sacrifice fly by Tamiera Sanchez.
 
Norfolk State got on the board in the sixth on a two-run home run to left from Tuil Iosefa.
 
The Eagles added three more in in the sixth; Jaylah Barr scored off a double by Olivia Daniel and Daniel later scored off a single through the right side by Parks. Parks then scored when Sanchez singled through the left side to give NCCU took a 5-2 lead.
 
Parks led the Eagles, going 2-for-3 from the plate with an RBI and five putouts. Kiara Hurley pitched the complete game and picked up her ninth win of the season.
 
Saturday will mark the first time since 2013 that a team not from the state of Florida will claim a MEAC softball championship. This will be the first softball championship for either Morgan State or North Carolina Central.
 
Morgan State and North Carolina Central faced off in the first round on Friday, with the Bears winning 4-3. NCCU will need to win twice to claim the MEAC crown.
