NORFOLK., Va., April 3, 2021—
North Carolina A&T State defeated Coppin State 3-1 (19-25, 25-21, 25-17, 25-9) in a battle of No. 1 seeds in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Volleyball Championship title match Saturday evening in Echols Hall.

It was the first-ever MEAC tournament title for the Aggies.

NCAT will learn its NCAA Tournament fate on Sunday, when ESPNU airs the Selection Show at 4 p.m.

Fatimah Shabazz led the Aggies (11-1) with 14 kills, while Edie Brewer, the MEAC Championship Outstanding Performer, nearly notched a triple-double with 28 assists, nine digs and eight kills.

Coppin State (11-5) jumped out to a 9-6 lead in the first set after a kill from Kareemah Hopkins, and the Eagles ended the first set on a 6-1 run to take the frame 25-19 and go up 1-0 in the match following a kill from Jordan Celestine.

But the Aggies, who toughed out a five-set marathon on Friday in the semifinal round, bounced back in the second set, leading 10-6 after a kill from Courteney Pitt. Coppin fought back, tying the set at 15-15 on a Celestine kill and then taking a 16-15 lead when Celestine and Miajavon Coleman paired on a block.

But the Aggies recovered and took the set 25-21 on a Shabazz and Mallory Porcher block to tie the match at 1-1.

That momentum carried into the third set, as the Aggies went up 7-3 and later led 14-9. Shabazz later recorded a kill to close out the second set 25-17 and give NCAT a 2-1 lead in the match.

From there, it was pretty much all Aggies.

NCAT opened the fourth set on a 4-0 spurt, prompting Coppin State to call timeout. The lead then grew to 11-1, and the Aggies later took a 16-3 lead on a Porcher kill. The lead continued to grow, and Shabazz forced match point with a kill that gave the Aggies a 24-9 lead.

An Eagles service error gave the Aggies the match and the title.

Brewer, Shabazz and Shaylynn Hall were all named to the All-Tournament Team, along with Coleman and Chudear Tut from Coppin State, Delaware State’s Sydney Lewis and North Carolina Central’s Ammaarah Williams.
