Coppin State, the No. 1 seed out of the Northern Division, had a tightly contested first set on its hands, even after the Eagles led 13-7 roughty midway through. In fact, N.C. Central cut the lead to one 24-23, threatening to push the opening frame beyond the 25-point mark.

But Coppin got a kill from MEAC Rookie of the Year Chudear Tut and held on, 25-23.

The opening stages of the second set were as tight as the first, with the Eagles nursing a one-point lead at 12-11. But Coppin went on an 11-3 run to take control of the second set, going up 23-14, before an N.C. Central error at the end gave Coppin set point, 25-16.

The third set saw Coppin State hold N.C. Central at bay, and the Eagles opened things up a bit after a Coleman block gave them a 19-14 lead.

NCCU (4-3) made a run late in the going, cutting the lead to 24-19, but an error on the next rally gave Coppin State the set 25-19 and the match in straight sets.

Williams led NCCU with nine kills.
