LEXINGTON, Ky. – Coppin State's Ashley Roman has been named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) East All-Region Team, it was announced by the organization on Tuesday morning. An Honorable Mention selection, Roman is the first Eagles volleyball player to ever earn AVCA All-Region honors, and the only libero recognized on the East All-Region Team.
A sophomore from Isabela, Puerto Rico, Roman led Coppin to its first ever winning season and MEAC regular-season championship while topping the conference with 5.54 digs per set to rank No. 19 in the nation. Roman was recognized as the MEAC Defensive Player of the Year and earned First Team All-Conference accolades for the second-straight season.
"To earn AVCA honors as one of the top players in the East Region is a tremendous honor for Ashley and is a testament to her hard work and dedication," head coach Tim Walsh said. "Ashley has played a played a huge role in taking our program to where it has never been before, and it's amazing to see our student-athletes being mentioned alongside some of the top programs in the Nation."
Roman twice recorded 32 digs in a match this season, equaling a school record held by Eagles all-time digs leader Gabrielle Otero. A 5-foot-5 libero, Roman recorded at least 20 digs in ten of 16 matches and her 32 digs in a MEAC Semifinals victory over North Carolina Central was the third-most in the nation during a three-set match. Roman also finished second on the team with nearly an assist per set and accumulated a 93.3 reception percentage.
In her career, Roman has tallied 815 digs which are the sixth-most in school-history while her 4.66 digs per set and three matches with over 30 digs are school-records.
The Eagles finished the season with an 11-5 overall record, setting program records for winning percentage (.688), MEAC victories (nine) and its longest win streak (10). Coppin advanced to just its second-ever MEAC championship match, its first since the 2013 season.
