Spartans Take Game 1, Errors Their Undoing in Game 2

Norfolk State won game 1 in walk-off fashion, but some early errors spelled doom for the Spartan softball team in the second contest against Cleveland State on Friday afternoon at the NSU Softball Field.

Sophomore Cam Andersen hit a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh in the first game for a 7-6 win. Three errors in the first inning of game 2 allowed the Vikings to score three unearned runs, and NSU never recovered in a 7-3 loss.

The Spartans ran their record to 5-7 on the year, and CSU moved to 5-5 overall.

Andersen (4-1) struck out 11 and picked up the win in the circle to go along with a pair of hits in the first game. She finished one strikeout short of the school record of 12 shared by several players.

Junior Brooke Bond went 3-for-4 with three RBI, including a run-scoring single in the first to start things off. She also belted a two-run home run in the third to give the Spartans a 3-1 lead. The Vikings tied it up at 3-3 before the Spartans plated three in the sixth.

Andersen and junior Denisha Megginson singled with one out, a walk loaded the bases, and a fielder's choice off the bat of sophomore Imani Moore gave NSU the lead. A double steal scored another run, and senior Jade Dixon beat out an infield single for a 6-3 advantage.

The Vikings, however, rallied with three runs in the top of the seventh, including a two-run double from Sydney Bajusz. A sac bunt tied it up, but Andersen struck out the last batter of the inning with a runner on third to keep CSU from taking the lead.

She then lined a double to left field with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, scoring pinch runner Alison Guckin from first for the walk-off win.

Dixon had a pair of hits, and Moore scored twice. She also hit 3-for-3 in game 2 as NSU finished with 21 hits for the afternoon.

Cleveland State scored the three runs in the first and another unearned run in the second. They added two more in the fourth for a 6-0 lead. Senior Jazzmaine Hammond scored on a wild pitch in the fourth to finally get NSU in the scoring column.

Down 7-1 going into the seventh, the Spartans got an RBI single from junior Gabby Vaughan and a sac fly from senior Tuli Iosefa for the final margin. The Spartans, however, left two more runners on base to end the game and 10 altogether in the nightcap.

Torrie Jenkins (1-0) got the win after allowing eight hits but just one unearned run for the Vikings. The sophomore duo of Alexis Robinson and Kirsten Greene combined for 11 strikeouts.

The two teams will play two more games on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m.
