Coppin Volleyball Wins Second Straight Against Howard

Coppin State's volleyball team picked up its second straight victory over MEAC rival Howard University, 3-1 (25-16, 21-25, 25-22, 25-16) on Thursday night at Burr Gymnasium.

The win improved the Eagles to 3-4 overall and 2-1 in league play and marked just the second time Coppin has defeated the Bison on the road.
 
Paola Caten led three Eagles with double digit kills with a match-high 15 kills on 32 swings to hit .281 for the match. A sophomore from Tampa, Fla., Caten was just shy of a double-double with nine digs and added a pair of aces.
 
Chudear Tut added 11 kills and a match-high five blocks and Miajavon Coleman recorded 10 kills with four digs.  Salma Gonzalez and Jordan Celestine chipped in with five kills apiece.
 
Kareemah Hopkins led all players with 36 assists and four aces while adding a pair of kills, three blocks and three digs.  The Eagles hit .257 for the match while holding Howard to a .183 percentage with seven total blocks. Ashley Roman was credited with a match-high 18 digs to lead the Navy & Gold on the defensive end.
 
The opening set remained in question through the halfway point of the frame with eight ties.  After an Eagles service error tied the the score at 13-13, Tut recorded four-straight points with two kills and two blocks to give CSU a 17-13 lead. Howard cut the deficit to 17-14 with a kill but Coppin closed it out with an 8-2 run.
 
Howard pulled away from Coppin late in the second set after a kill from Tut tied the score at 14-14. The Bison then scored three-straight points and the Eagles got no closer than two points the rest of the frame.
 
The third set was tied at 15-15 but Coppin's defense forced three-straight attack errors to take an 18-15 lead.  Howard scored the next two points to pull within 18-17 and the teams traded points until Gonzalez recorded a kill and Roman delivered with an ace to make it a 24-21 score.  Howard answered with a kill, but a service error gave the Eagles the win.
 
Trailing, 8-7, in the fourth set, the Eagles went on a 6-1 run which featured three kills from Caten to make it a 13-9 score.  Howard was able to pull within 15-12 and 19-16, but CSU finished the Bison off with six-straight points with kills from Caten, Gonzalez and Tut.
