MEAC Announces Weekly Tennis Honors, presented by Coca-Cola

NORFOLK, Va., March 31, 2021Norfolk State redshirt senior Ignacio Guevel was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola, the conference office announced today, and teammate Santiago Rendon was named Rookie of the Week. Florida A&M senior Rachel Harden was named Women’s Tennis Player of the Week and South Carolina State’s Rachida Berjane was named Rookie of the Week.
 
Guevel (r-Sr., Santiago del Estero, Argentina) keyed a pair of non-conference wins for the Spartans, starting with Friday’s clinching point against Augusto Roca of North Carolina Wesleyan, 7-6, 6-3. He also won his doubles match that day, 6-4 alongside Federico Rebecchini. Against Christopher Newport on Saturday, Guevel won 6-1, 6-3 over Matthew Dubuque.
 
Rendon (Fr., Bogota, Colombia) defeated North Carolina Wesleyan’s Jhonny Acosta 7-6, 6-3 and Christopher Newport’s Ryan Macy 6-2, 6-2, both at No. 3 singles.
 
Harden (Sr., Augusta, Ga.) went a perfect 4-0 this past week, winning both singles and both doubles matches. She opened the week by defeating North Carolina Central’s Maru Bergaus 6-1, 6-0, while also notching a 7-6 (7-2) doubles win, before defeating South Carolina State’s Andjela Mihajovic 0-6, 6-3, 10-3 and picking up a 6-4 win in doubles play with partner Arielle Nealy.
 
Berjane (Fr., Casablanca, Morocco) dominated at the No.1 spot, posting 6-2, 6-3 wins over Haleigh Porter of Florida A&M. She also won in doubles play alongside Lasya Patnaik, 6-4, to lead the Bulldogs to a 2-0 start in MEAC Southern Division play. 
 
Other Top Performers
Sergiu Medesan (Coppin State) won 6-3, 6-4 over Salem’s Matthew Michbata to remain unbeaten in singles play this season.
 
Romani Mayers (Howard) notches his first collegiate victory, defeating Jarrett Karnibad of Mount St. Mary’s 6-2, 6-2.
 
Paula Fortuno (Norfolk State) defeated North Carolina Wesleyan’s Stefanie Wilske 0-6, 6-4, 6-2.
 
Laura Ruiz (Norfolk State) won 6-2, 6-2 over North Carolina Wesleyan’s Giulia Zanetti.
 
Miles Clark (North Carolina Central) notched the Eagles’ point against Davidson, defeating Yash Parikh 2-6, 7-5, 6-4.
 
Josefa Fernandez (North Carolina Central) defeated Florida A&M’s Haleigh Porter 6-1, 7-5 and Shaw’s Michelle Blaha 7-5, 6-1.
