NORFOLK, Va., March 29, 2021–
North Carolina Central freshman outfielder Imara Harrell has been named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Softball Player of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola, as well as Rookie of the Week, it was released on Monday.
NCCU senior pitcher Kiara Hurley, meanwhile, is the MEAC Pitcher of the Week.
Harrell (OF, 5-6, Fr., Mooresville, N.C.) amassed a .500 batting average (8-for-16) with a team-high six runs scored and two runs batted in as the Eagles won three of four contests against Florida A&M, a team which it had not beaten since April 18, 2015. Harrell also had a .563 slugging percentage and recorded seven putouts and one assist from her outfield position. In the first game of the weekend, she went 4-for-4 with a double, two runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base, marking the just the sixth time since the program joined NCAA Division I in 2008 that an NCCU player has recorded four hits in a single game.
Hurley (P, 5-5, Sr., Maumee, Ohio) had a busy and successful weekend against the Rattlers, earning two complete-game wins along with three scoreless innings in relief to notch a save. In 17 innings inside the circle, she allowed just five runs while holding FAMU to a .197 batting average.
Other Top Performers
Mikayla Barnard (Morgan State) secured an 8-0 victory over Bowie State in her only contest of the week, improving to 4-2 on the season. She pitched 4.0 innings in that appearance, allowing no runs on two hits and a walk while striking out three batters.
Jalian Young (Morgan State) went 2-for-3 (.667), including a triple, two runs scored and three runs batted in as the Bears picked up a couple of wins over Bowie State.
Mia Ewell (Morgan State) went 4-for-6 (.667) in the doubleheader sweep over Bowie State with one double, one run scored and three RBIs.
