NORFOLK, Va., March 22, 2021—
Coppin State junior Miajavon Coleman and
Delaware State senior Mayah Ngundam were selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Volleyball Co-Players of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola, the conference office announced today.
Delaware State’s Valeria Otero was named Rookie of the Week, while
Coppin State junior Kareemah Hopkins earned Setter of the Week honors and
Coppin State junior Ashley Roman was named Defensive Specialist of the Week.
Coleman (5-10, Jr., OH, San Antonio, Texas) opened with a double-double on Thursday in a five-set win over Delaware State, going for 17 kills and 10 digs to go along with a pair of service aces and two blocks (one solo, one assisted). In Friday’s rematch, a four-set win for the Eagles, she had 11 kills, six digs and three block assists.
Ngundam (5-9, Sr., OH, Bowie, Md.) opened the Hornets’ week with 13 kills in a sweep of Morgan State, a match in which she hit .556 after committing just three errors. On Thursday’s match against Coppin State, she added 12 more kills on .235 hitting and five total blocks (four assisted), before turning in 11 more kills in Friday’s rematch against the Eagles.
Otero (5-9, Fr., OH, Manati, Puerto Rico) recorded double-digit kills in all three of the Hornets’ matches this past week. She started the week with a team high-tying 13 kills against Morgan State, hitting .258, to go along with six digs. She then recorded double-doubles in back-to-back matches against Coppin State, going for 16 kills and 17 digs on Thursday (both career highs) and 11 kills and 12 digs on Friday.
Hopkins (5-11, Jr., S, San Diego, Calif.) racked up 48 assists in the first match against Delaware State, while also recording seven digs and four kills. In the rematch on Friday, she added 30 more assists and assisted on three blocks.
Roman (5-5, So., DS/L, Isabela, Puerto Rico) tied a program record for digs in a match with 32 on Thursday against Delaware State, and she added 21 more digs in the rematch one night later. For the week, Roman averaged 26.5 digs per match and 5.9 digs per set.
Other Top Performers
Chudear Tut (Coppin State) had 10 kills each in back-to-back wins over Delaware State.
Jasmal Cruz (Delaware State) had 20 digs and nine assists in the first match against Coppin State.
Jelena Dukic (Delaware State) had 26 assists in both matches against Coppin State and came within one dig of a double-double in the first contest.
Jennifer Bolden (Howard) had nine kills and four blocks in a three-set win over Morgan State.
Milexa Cardona (Howard) recorded a double-double in the first match against Morgan State with 38 assists and 10 digs.
Kailyn Williams (Howard) had 12 kills and 11 kills, respectively, in a pair of matches against Morgan State.
Jada Bivins (Morgan State) had 15 assists in each match against Howard, adding 10 digs in Thursday’s win for a double-double.
Gabriela Hiciano (Morgan State) had nine kills in the first match against Howard.
Tylar Roberson (Morgan State) recorded a double-double in the first match against Howard with 14 kills and 10 digs.
Jennevy Santos (Morgan State) had 11 digs on Thursday against Howard.
