NORFOLK, Va., March 15, 2021—
Coppin State junior Miajavon Coleman was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Volleyball Player of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola, the conference office announced today.
Delaware State’s Valeria Otero was named Rookie of the Week, while
Coppin State junior Kareemah Hopkins earned Setter of the Week honors and
Coppin State sophomore Paola Caten was named Defensive Specialist of the Week.
Coleman (5-10, Jr., OH, San Antonio, Texas) racked up 19 kills and 11 digs against Morgan State to record her first double-double of the season. Against Delaware State earlier in the week, Coleman had a team-high nine kills, seven digs and three block assists.
Otero (5-9, Fr., OH, Manati, Puerto Rico) led the Hornets with 10 kills and 12 digs, for her second career double-double, against Coppin State. She recorded eight more kills in a sweep of Howard, hitting .400 in the first meeting of the week, before added six kills, four digs, a service ace and a block assist in the rematch a day later.
Hopkins (5-11, Jr., S, San Diego, Calif.) racked up a career-high 52 assists and was one dig shy of a double-double against Morgan State, while also tallying three kills and assisting on a block. In a sweep of Delaware State, she had 21 assists, five kills and a pair of block assists.
Caten (5-11, So., OH/RS, Tampa, Fla.) began the week by racking up 13 digs and a block in a sweep of Delaware State, before recording a career-high 18 digs (to go along with 12 kills and a block) in a four-set win over Morgan State.
Other Top Performers
Chudear Tut (Coppin State) had 12 kills and a .435 hitting percentage against Morgan State.
Jasmal Cruz (Delaware State) had a season-high 17 digs against Coppin State.
Jelena Dukic (Delaware State) had 19 assists and eight digs against Coppin State, before recording 18 assists and 17 assists, respectively, in sweeps of Howard.
Sydney Lewis (Delaware State) had eight kills on .538 hitting in the second match against Howard.
Tamar Wells (Howard) had 13 kills against Morgan State and hit .750 in the second Delaware State match.
Edie Brewer (North Carolina A&T State) had 20 assists and nine kills in the Aggies’ second sweep of South Carolina State, after turning in 18 assists and eight digs in the first sweep.
Andrea Laboy-Rivera (North Carolina A&T State) had 10 digs and 14 digs, respectively, in back-to-back sweeps of South Carolina State.
Fatimah Shabazz (North Carolina A&T State) had 11 kills on .563 hitting in the first sweep of South Carolina State, before adding 10 kills and two aces in the second.
