MEAC Announces Weekly Volleyball Honors, presented by Coca-Cola

NORFOLK, Va., March 1, 2021Coppin State senior Salma Gonzalez was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Volleyball Player of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola, the conference office announced today. Coppin State’s Chudear Tut was named Rookie of the Week, while Coppin State junior Kareemah Hopkins and North Carolina A&T State senior Edie Brewer shared Setter of the Week honors and Coppin State sophomore Ashley Roman was named Defensive Specialist of the Week.
 
Gonzalez (5-8, Sr., RS/S, Isabela, Puerto Rico) recorded a double-double in the Eagles’ four-set win over five-time defending MEAC champion Howard on Thursday. She had 10 kills and 11 digs in the match, hitting .409 after committing just one error in 22 total attacks, while also racking up a career-high five service aces.
 
Tut (6-2, Fr., MH, Minneapolis, Minn.) racked up eight kills and hit .533, going error-free in 15 total attempts, against Howard. She also assisted on four blocks – one of three Coppin State players to do so.
 
Hopkins (5-11, Jr., S, San Diego, Calif.) quarterbacked the Eagles offense with 37 assists and four kills (going error-free in eight attempts to hit .500), helping Coppin State register its second-highest attack percentage of the season at .290. She also had five digs on the defensive end.
 
Brewer (6-0, Sr., S/RS, West Chester, Ohio) had 23 assists in both three-set wins over South Carolina State on Thursday and Friday, and on Thursday, she added 14 digs for a double-double. She hit .467 in the two matches, averaging 7.67 assists, 3.0 digs and 1.50 kills per set.
 
Roman (5-5, So., L/DS, Isabela, Puerto Rico) notched her fourth 20-dig match of the season, racking up 20 of them in the Eagles’ four-set win over Howard.
 
Other Top Performers
Paola Caten (Coppin State) had 15 kills, six digs, four block assists and two service aces, hitting .467 against Howard.
 
Marcelle Butler (Howard) had 14 kills on .276 hitting against Coppin State.
 
Kayla Diaz (Howard) recorded a double-double (19 assists, 12 digs) against Coppin State.
 
Arianna Mackey (North Carolina A&T State) had three blocks (one solo) on Friday against South Carolina State.
 
Fatimah Shabazz (North Carolina A&T State) had 10 kills and hit .529 on Friday against South Carolina State.
